Clovis, charming and delightful Clovis, with your big brown eyes and brindle coat, how I miss your sighs of muted annoyance when the skies opened up and rained on your parade. Your disdain for all things wet and sandy made life in Spencerville an interesting tale, though never a dull one.

It was a brisk autumn day in Spencerville, the kind that made Clovis’ whiskers shiver a bit. He was enjoying the warmth of his favorite bed, deeply engaged in suckling his white stuffed bone, nestled comfortably within the confines of Upper Black Bulldog Bay. Suddenly, the bell of Doggy Donuts rang in a discordant way, suggesting something was amiss. It was Gilbert’s call for help.

I still remember how Clovis’ ears perked up as the pastry-scented SOS wafted through the air. He knew all too well it signaled his buddy Gilbert was in a fix, and though other dogs got on his nerves, for his core circle, he’d move mountains.

Frankly, the last place Clovis wanted to be on such a cold, brisk day was anywhere but his warm bed, but loyalty was his instinctive duty, overriding even his most primal desires. There was a pep talk at Shih Tzu Stadium first, an excited alliance of the Bulldog clan. Gilbert had been kidnapped, held captive somewhere around the sandy banks of East Pug Palace.

Sarah, a local border collie with a feisty spirit and an uncanny knack for uncovering clues, was the tip-of-the-iceberg of the team. I watched the way she spoke to Clovis, encouraging him to sniff out Gilbert’s trail from beneath the furrowed Sand Pug dunes.

My brave English bulldog embarked on his mission impossible, determined and steadfast despite the harsh winds baying at him from the beach. The memory of the rescue remains burned in my heart: Clovis emerging victorious from the sandy rubble, Gilbert in tow, exhausted yet triumphant; The reunion of the Bulldog clan, which incidentally took place at Pooche Potatoes. With the ordeal over, Clovis cemented himself as a Spencerville legend, an English bulldog who undoubtedly proved that for love and friendship, he’d defy his worst dislikes.
