Russell PawWord Story
“Hey Dad, had an absolute ball today (literally!). Ended up in Spencerville’s Annual Football Championship. You won’t believe it but I ditched my usual lounging for a dash across the field, football in jaws. Managed to outshine every other critter there! Fear? What’s that? Felt like a real debonair footballer. PS: Pawsome Pancakes sends love! Woof, Fat Russ.”
I am sitting here in front of Pawsome Pancakes, the best pancake place in Spencerville, I’ll have you know, recounting the day that flipped our peaceful town upside down. One word: Football. Now who would have thought that our chubby, lovable English Bulldog, Russell would be involved in anything as thrilling as football?
“Oh sure, my Russell loves his games,” I began talking to Detective Cooper, “But, you see, swimming and ball games are more of a Fenway thing…Russell is more of a…well, devourer of cheesesteaks and corned beef.”
“Well, let me tell you something intriguing then mam, today Mr. Russell decided to sit in on the Spencerville’s Annual Football Championship at Greyhound Grove.”
My eyes widened. Russell and football! I would never have believed it, but pictures never lie. Detective Cooper showed me a picture of Russell, tongue hanging out as he sat in the lush green fields, surrounded by a shower of mutts, each one with a competitive gleam in their eye.
“And here’s the thing,” Detective Cooper’s voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, “Right when the play was at its most intense moment, guess who dashed across the field yelping, with a football wedged between his jaws?”
I couldn’t believe it. Russell, more known for his stubbornness and loyalty, turned into the star player in the middle of the game – an absolute spectacle.
Later while lounging at The Dapper Dog Salon, I recollected the adventurous afternoon. I remembered Russell’s fearful relationship with vacuums and loud noises. So, had he overcome his fears for a game?
“You know madam,” shared the salon attendant, a wise pug named Spencer, “Even the best of us are afraid sometimes. But it only lasts until it doesn’t. That’s true for us humans, no harm admitting it’s the same for us pets.”
That day, as Russell retreated to the comforts of his spacious backyard, Colonel Quakers at his side, he looked more content than ever. He had tasted forbidden fruit, you could say. The sweet, exotic taste of adventure.
As for me, I chuckled at the thought. Russell, my fear-riddled bulldog, had turned into a daring, debonair footballer. I guess, Spencerville had that effect on pets, and football had that effect on Russell.
Who would have imagined? But isn’t that the just so Spencerville? That place that takes us by surprise, makes courageous heroes out of chubby Bulldogs, and creates beautiful stories from simple beginnings. Spencerville, where our playful companion pets live out their wildest dreams, lick the tastiest pancakes, and leave us in awe.
The End.
