Harold PawWord Story
“Hey, Mom. You’d love Fetch-N-Bites! It’s lively and, for the first time, I got to be part of family dinner times, reminiscing about our shared quirks and routines. You’d be happy to know that I ran into Smiley, Babe, Pugsley, George, even Pooh and Betty. Guess what, R&R with them at The Dapper Dog Salon, Retriever River and The Woofy Bakery. I still adore basking in the sun, just like in our backyard! As you are reading this, I want to tell you that here, in Spencerville, all of us are happy and content, living peacefully. And don’t worry, I’ll always be your Harold – wagging tail, velvety fur, and all. Love you forever, Harold the Hound”
The crowd erupted as I walked into Fetch-N-Bites, causing me to halt just beyond the entrance. A familiar patch of light brown fur, coupled with those unforgettable yellow eyes, stared back at me from a corner of the pet-friendly restaurant. “Harold?” I murmured, my heart pounding in my chest.
Harold, my beloved wolf mix, who had passed into Spencerville some time ago, wagged his tail at me from his spot in the bustling diner. My eyes filled with tears as I stooped down to caress his head. His big ears twitched with joy, the same ears that were a legendary trait in his persona. He nudged his head against my palm, his loyalty still unwavering even in the spectral dimension.
“Just as I remembered,” I found myself uttering, memories overwhelming me. God, this place was special.
Harold guided me to a table where a bowl of stew was just landing. His eyes twinkled with the delight, the whiff of it bringing back family dinner times which he always cherished.
“Oh, Harold,” I grinned, patting his velvety fur. “You haven’t changed.” Spencerville, I realized, was home to memorized interactions, focused on moments of happiness, the joy of routine and the celebration of quirks of life we shared back on earth.
Soon, we were joined by his Spencerville buddies. Smiley, Babe, Pugsley, George, Pooh, Betty, and others, who trotted along as if they owned the place. And heck, they did. The others like Pepper, Penelope, Chester, JD, Chief, Sylvester, Dimples, all joined in and my heart swelled up seeing their gleaming eyes.
I spent the day with them, visiting The Dapper Dog Salon, meandering through Retriever River, and even nibbling on dog-safe doughnuts from The Woofy Bakery. I saw Harold bask in the sun on Beagle Beach, his eyes closed in bliss, every bit the sun-lover he was during his time in our backyard.
As the day came to a close, I prepared to leave this canine paradise of Spencerville. My Harold pressed his cold nose into my hand, his tail making slow sweeps in the air. His expression was content, almost as if he knew we would be reunited again someday.
“My Harold,” I breathed out, my voice thick with emotions. “I’ll miss you.”
His yellow eyes twinkled, telling me he would be okay. That all of them would be okay. That they were living a human-like existence, waiting for the inevitable reunion.
With that, I walked out of Spencerville, my heart filled with an odd sense of peace. Knowing Harold was waiting with his fellow friends and companions was as reassuring as a bone to a dog. It was heartwarming to know that they were all in Spencerville, basking in the sun, living peacefully, just being happy.
As I left, the echo of Harold’s wagging tail filled the air, a steady heartbeat drumming to the rhythm of our shared memory. A heartbeat that I knew would live on until time stood still and we became stardust, wandering aimlessly throughout the cosmos. But until then, my Harold would wait, living his best life in Spencerville, the nearly perfect place for our beloved pets.
The End.
