Russell PawWord Story
“Well, there I was,” I said, nestling myself comfortably on the lawn that fringes Labradoodle Lake. “Or shall I say, here I am. Russell, the brindle Bulldog with the unmistakable white strip adorning his forehead, catching the sun on the outskirts of Spencerville; the haven for us pets that bid adieu to Earth!”
With a sigh as delicate as the entirety of my existence, I glanced around to see Fenway and Spencer – our little Pug executive – engaged in a spirited debate about last night’s college football updates. A chuckle escaped me, as I glanced at Tanner, Spencer’s son, stepping cautiously out of my way, fearing another round of our usual roughhouse shenanigans.
I looked under my paw, finding my loyal compadre, Muggsy the stuffed Bulldog, comfortably tucked under. The sight prompted a soft grin. “None could separate us, ey Muggsy?” I murmured, half talking to myself, half addressing my devoted friend.
Ah, but mornings by Labradoodle Lake couldn’t be sustained for long. The luscious scent of freshly prepared K9 Kebabs whirling from The Cat’s Meow and the call of my pal Barkley for a round of sprint in the park was too inviting a temptation! And, of course, there was Charlie’s Italian to consider. A cheesy-steak chased by peanut butter ice cream for dessert, a combination that was about as hard to refuse as it was to share my indestructible frisbee, Blue, or my coveted corned beef treat.
I chuckled, surveying my outstretched paws, “But Blue and the beef stay out of the agreement.” I hummed to myself and basked in the warm sun. Water, I reflected, was not something I found particularly endearing, so staying out of Brown Boxer Beach was natural. Neither were those unsettlingly loud noises nor dreaded solitude.
My musings were abruptly interrupted by the cheerful sight of Wrigley, the old mutt, challenging me to a chase with the ever elusive bluebirds. I grinned, almost toppling Millie, the King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, as I sprinted, leaving her to coax the leaves rustling around her.
Each day seems to blend into the other here in Spencerville, one day of joy to another. Oh, they miss their parents, just as I do, but we do not let the longing consume us. We have fun, live as though we were human, continually tread the same roads that weave through our paradise, and wait – for the day when our parents will find us. We live in a gentle echo of a tug at our hearts, an echo that reverberates through Spencerville.
My tale would not be complete without a mention of Fuzzy, the golden retriever. The half of our little Bulldog-Retriever team, with his passion for tennis balls, mirrors my own passion for adventure. After all, what is life, but a big, thrilling, endearing journey for us, the curious and playful residents of Spencerville?
“Dad, chilling by Labradoodle Lake, soaking up sun & doggy debates. Me & Muggsy are inseparable. Got tempted by K9 Kebabs & Barkley’s park sprints. Italian cheesy-steak’s hard to resist just like sharing my frisbee & beef treat. Dodged water & scary noises as usual. Chased bluebirds with Wrigley, almost bowled over Millie! Every day’s a paradise here, but we do miss you. Life’s a rollicking journey with my pals, especially Fuzzy. Love, Hamburger Jones Jr.”
