It was our rendezvous spot, the place where Champ and Daisy awaited my rambunctious entry.

‘Well, if it isn’t little Sammy, uh, ‘little’ being generous…’ Champ would greet me, his barks lacing with the cherry-on-top sardonic humor. The jest would garner hearty chuckles as my rumbling growls of fake indignation played along beautifully to his routine. Daisy, the ‘diplomat’, would then intervene before it escalated into an all-out fur fest.

After an exerting wrestle with Champ and some hours spent swapping tales of our narrow escapes and near misses, our group would unanimously agree to dinner. Bark Burgers was an establishment favored by us – an uncanny mix of the rustic charm of Pawsburg and the gritty spirit of the city. Everyone, from the mop dog running the cash register to the Doberman flipping burgers at the grill, held no human prejudices. An Italian Bulldog eating a Mexican Fur Taco was no more a spectacle than a German Shepherd requesting a Pupsicle at the Palace. Meanwhile, I was content merely posing as a canine fashionisto while the ensemble laughed and howled our hearts out.

As we embraced the end of another extraordinary escapade, another feast of friendship, I could almost taste the bittersweet residue of night’s passing. The glow of home beckoned, my spaghetti-stuffed fantasies dancing with frivolous certainty, dictated by Martha’s culinary clock.
