Fat Russell PawWord Story
“Hey Gran, just to let you know I’ve moved to Spencerville, which might as well be dog heaven! Climbed a freezing mountain, surfed a hot desert, stuffed my face with peanut butter (not the smooth kind), and got a fab salon treatment. Miss ya, but don’t worry about old Russ, I’m having a tail-waggin time with Wrigley, Fenway, Millie, and Spencer, the best crew a dog could ask for. All love, Fat Russell.”
As I found myself staring down at the rickety sign that read ‘Welcome to Spencerville’, I knew I was in for one hell of an adventure. Benefiting from millennia of canine wisdom, I was familiar with the legends of this place – where us pets graduate to after our trifling scratches of earthly existence. Dropping the much-loved mottled tennis ball from my jowls, I sat down with the distinct gravitas of an English Bulldog, which I am.
First order of business, Siberian Summit or Lower Silver Siberian Summit? A trying choice, no doubt, for a hearty fellow who relishes the comforts of solid ground beneath his paws rather than the chilling expanse of the unknown. However, owing to my unyielding curiosity – a discrete charm of my breed – the summit called.
Lo and behold! What’s a striking panorama without your crew to indulge in its splendour? Spotting them was effortlessly easy for old Russ. Fenway, the familiar and comforting silhouette of bulldog companionship; Wrigley, the towering behemoth; the subtly elegant Millie, a Spaniel of high breeding, and the ever-energetic Spencer, the pug of pugs. Adventure always had a way of bringing us together, here on this mountainous bend.
Skipping over the thrill of scaling icy heights, we descended to a searing reality – the Yellow Tan Dalmatian Desert. Our shared beach affinity served us a tad bit too kindly here, complete with the recall of salty sea breeze that put my fur on end. But what was heat to a battalion of adventure-seekers? Just another notch on the harness, I say.
Spencerville, the near-perfect divergence from the humdrum life we had known, triggered nostalgic cravings. The promise of Philly cheesesteak wafting from the Furrific Fried Chicken joint nudged me towards it. Definitely not for their fried poultry, canine intuition told me it would be far from Philly.
Our posse knew better. We knew to avoid places like The Barkery or Fetch-N-Bites. Not for dislike, but for the sheer distraction they provided from the stunner of a view that Spencerville was. ‘Get carried away, and you might just become a Dalmatian’, so we often mused with a chuckle amongst ourselves.
Adventure did need a moment of rest, of course. Lured by the beckoning neon sign, we tottered towards The Pawsome Pet Pharmacy. Not for ailments, mind you. ‘I bet they have peanut butter,’ I declared, citing my gastronomic intuition. Wouldn’t you know it? They did have peanut butter. The good, chunky kind that sticks to the roof of your mouth.
Tummies filled and hearts content, we decided to wrap up with a visit to the Pampered Pooch Salon. Now, a visit to the salon might seem frivolous to most. But in the words of the sophisticated Millie, ‘Every adventure has a knack for mussing one’s mane.’ So, the salon it was, not for dramatic transformations but for the tranquilizing massage chairs and gossip.
Thus, it goes without saying that Spencerville was, and would forever remain, our patch of heaven on earth. Whether it be a desert or mountain, whether chasing frisbees or indulging in canine confections, it was our shared adventures that made it a town of pure bliss. After all, what is the bond of friendship if not celebrated in the play of boisterous, silly pets? And let it be known – Fat Russell will forever be the heart, soul, and stomach of this haven.
The End.
