Harold PawWord Story
“Mom, woke up in a new world as Harold The Hound! It’s a dog’s life in a place called Spencerville, filled with coffee for canines, beaches, and the familiar face of Penelope. Sometimes miss our old life, but this quirky place sure is a vibrant adventure. Life’s paw-some but can’t wait to see you again on the other side. Love, Harry.”
I can still remember the morning I awoke in Spencerville, how the unfamiliar scents danced upon my nose as the mere lightening of the world introduced me to a landscape both alien and beguiling. I’d spent lifetimes treading the meandering paths of forests, basking in the glory of sunlight dancing on lily-strewn ponds, yet nothing had prepared me for the surreal vibrant harmony of South Poodle Pond. I found myself perplexed by my sudden canine existence.
Oh, but Spencerville! A place where four-legged beasts lived lives as human as any Broadway matinee. Despite my imposing frame and my wolfish features softened by domestic canine genes, I, Harold, found my place within the merry chaos.
The morning sun rose over Bulldog Bay, and I found myself seated at an outdoor table at Paws-A-Latte, their spectacular doguccinos whisking me back to times spent nuzzling my human family’s legs as they sipped their morning brew. As I nudged the doguccino with my muzzle, I found Smiley approaching. Smiley, a fat Retriever, and a constant mischievous grin plastered on his face, had been my adoptive brother in our last life.
“What’s cookin’, Harold?” Smiley wagged his tail as he posed his standard greeting. The memory of ‘dinner’ sparked a burst of joy within me. It was an obsession I’ve carried over from my past life. The resulting physical manifestation – a wagging tail, twitching ears – a hilarious, yet comforting reminder of my existence.
“The usual, I suppose.” I couldn’t help but smile, returning his wag and watched him plop down on the chair beside me.
Days filled with playful romps around Red Beagle Beach, snoozing in the sun outside The Fetching Feline – a playful misnomer – Pet Emporium, and the odd chew bone from The Pawsome Pet Pharmacy became my new normal. But the city lights of Doggy Delight at evening stole my fascination every time.
Loneliness, the unimaginable horror of such a reality in a place where solitude was an impossible concept, would creep upon me sometimes. Remembering the old life would do that to a dog. It was in those moments I’d turn my eyes away from the vibrancy of Bulldog Bay and look up at the moon — its silvery glow reminding me of the baths I’d detested, but now I saw them in a different light. Bats are nothing to a dog in Spencerville.
It wasn’t long after that, that I found myself drawn to her – Penelope. Childhood companion in my last life, yet here, in Spencerville, she brought a spark that turned the ordinary into the extraordinary, a bewitching pull of familiarity within a world of incorporeal reality. A silent bond, transcending species, and realms, our connection was inevitable. We’d spend our days scampering along the beach, nights under the moonlit sky, sharing stories of our past lives, reincarnating brief moments of shared human connection.
A canine’s conundrum, yes, but perhaps a soul’s journey, too. Even in the heart of chaos that was Spencerville, I felt more alive than ever before – a realm of pets living human-like existence, a strange twist of fate, bridging the gap between two worlds. As I surveyed our new haven, not a human in sight, yet our memories of them integument, I knew one truth – this was a waiting place, in the best sense of the term, where the essence of our human lives intertwined with our canine existence, until we meet again.
The End.
