The sun had barely whispered its first hello when the pawsome racket kicked in – the ungodly combination of thundering snoring and chattering teeth. Sighing, I looked around to my comrades, a potpourri of droopy-eyed mutts, and brave Griff, our terrier treasurer, struggling to stifle his snoozing solo. I shrugged my shoulders with an “it’s a dog’s life” resignation and jumped off my plush cushion.

In the land of Pawsburg, adventure was always lurking behind the nearest hydrant. That morning, my belly nudged me towards Pooched Potatoes. It was the joint in town, serving up hot bowls of everything you could dream of. I particularly fancied their chili-dog, sans chili, of course. As I strutted down Shepherd Skyline, my ears adorably flopped in cadence with each step. Admittedly, this was one of the moments I loved, cruising the streets, turning heads, part fear, part admiration; so what if most of those heads barely reached my knee?

As I crossed parkways and strolled through Golden Gate Gardens, I spotted Sassy, the local Scottish Terrier, known for her fearless feistiness. She popped her head from behind a hydrant, a habit she developed after watching too many Bond films.

“Tia! Heard the news?” she yipped, excitement literal tail-wagging.
“What? Has the bulldog finally learned to bark properly?” I asked, my tail a wagging metronome of curiosity.
“No, ya big oaf! The Mayor’s coming to Pawsburg!”
My ears perked up at the seriousness in her voice, “The Mayor? The human one or our Mayor Whiskers?”

After swallowing the shock of the news, my mind wandered to North Chihuahua Castle, the famed Town Hall. The Mayor visiting Pawsburg, it was an unprecedented move. It seemed our cover was blown, our secret paradise was a secret no more.

I realized it was up to us, the defenders of Pawsburg, to protect our sacred land. We needed to organize. Fast. I dashed towards the Woofy Bakery, our unofficial headquarters, and raised the alarm.

That day, the streets of Pawsburg saw an unusually busy Tia. Planning diversionary tactics at Shepherd Skyline, devising inconspicuous routes, preparing for the arrivals, it was not every day Pawsburg was expected to host two-legged officials. Amidst the panic and preparation, our brotherhood became stronger.

As the sun lowered, the flickering neon of The Fetching Deli lured me in. It was going to be a long night, and what better way to indulge than with a sandwich that could bury a Saint Bernard. The hustle of the day wore off, replaced by a quietly simmering anxiety. As I left, parcels for my cohorts in tow, I steeled myself for the trials to come.

Throughout Pawsburg, whisperings of “The Mayor’s coming” echoed. In the Pooch Playhouse, the Woofy Bakery, and even the Woof and Whisker Wellness Center, our troops were gearing up. We were as ready as a bunch of pets could be.

As the night clouds crept in, I thought of the busy day that unfolded and couldn’t help but let out a woof of laughter. Just another day in the life of Tia, the detective dog of Pawsburg.
