At dawn, I rolled over onto my back, letting the glimmers of the sun trickle through the slits of my squishy face and warm my underbelly. Yes, my dear, I’m your old friend, Tango, the bulldog of intense charm and deceptive docility hailing from the plateau of Bulldogs in the makeshift majesty of Spencerville, or should I say Dogville.

I grumbled to myself as I yawned, my day ahead already teeming with profound complexities, teetering on the brink of a cucumber shortage. You haven’t known true catastrophe until you’ve looked deep into the cavernous chasm of an empty cucumber dish. The consternation of it was mellowed only by the odyssey of the impending wrestling match with Vacuum. I swear, it hissed at me with demonic delight, that overly ostentatious contraption with a penchant for my plainly profound eternal nemesis – tidiness.

An absent cucumber I could master, but Cheese too had conspired to commit a culinary coup. Gone! Not a shred of it anywhere! And every instinct in my well-muscled canine body whispered ‘conspiracy’. It was a foreboding chill, raising the hair along my spine with its insidious touch. His beloved Root Beer Float too was suspiciously absent from the fridge at the Ruff-n-Ready.

A glint of revelation flickered. Whoever had tampered with my favorite fancies deeply underestimated the determination and resolve of a broad-chested, lion pawed, brawny bulldog. With this, I set upon the exploration of the puzzle that lay ahead, traversing the Yellow Tan Dalmatian Desert to Collie Canyon then returning to Golden Retriever River.

But naught seemed amiss, every canine and feline inhabiting this utopia blissfully ignorant of the unfolding menace. The Tail Wagger’s Tailor had stitched minus any worry, as the dogs tugged and pulled on durable rags, oblivious to the single-minded resolve of this trusted friend.

It struck me then, or rather it slithered into my thoughts, a tinny whisper that grew in intensity until it was an echo bouncing around in my head – manipulation. I was being played, there was no doubt. The suspect list was a maze and I was stuck right in the middle of it; the clues muddled and tangled like the plot of a literary thriller.

The sun had set when I found myself circling the Chow Hound Café, and skeptically sniffing the gently swaying entryway. And then slowly, surreptitiously, it sniffed back at me. Call it paranoia, call it delusion, call it crafty intuition, but I, dear Tango, was onto something gnarly.

The following days led me deeper into the psychological cave of manipulation and deceit, as I uncovered truths about the town and its inhabitants far removed from its idyllic exterior. For beneath the seemingly perfect surface of Spencerville, a torrent of turbulence thundered, a cyclone of conspiracies churned, and I, Tango the Bulldog, was its steadfast seeker.
