Lola PawWord Story
Dad, I had another Pawsburg adventure! Frolicked on Bulldog Bay, devoured a cheeseburger at Chow Hound, smashed the games at South Siberian Summit! Wiped out now, but know what? Pawsburg games champ for the 5th time! Woof-woof! -Love, Lollypop 🐾
Whenever Lola disappears in the middle of the night, I know she’s headed to Pawsburg. There’s a certain excitement in her tail waggle, a gleam in her brown eyes so full of adventure, it’s contagious. I witness all this and can’t help but smile, bearing the knowledge of her secret life.
As dusk falls, Lola pads to the window, her tail swishing. She has that far-off look in her eyes again, her paws dancing with impatience. With a quick, almost imperceptible glance my way, she slips through the dog door unnoticed by everyone, save for me.
Her first stop is usually at Bulldog Bay, an umbrella-studded beach where dogs of all shapes and sizes frolic in the surf and sand, playing tug-of-war and running wild. She takes a moment to lap up the cool water and then runs full tilt into the waves. Her size doesn’t deter her as she shoves her body into the waves, emerging each time with a playful wag of her tail, her bemused friend, Peggy, in tow.
Food is next on the agenda. Given her fondness for a good cheeseburger, she makes a beeline for the bustling Chow Hound Café. Amid the clinking of bowls and the bustling chatter of various dog breeds, she orders her favorite, a juicy cheeseburger, eschewing any mention of ‘salad’. Her satisfaction is evident in the relaxed wag of the tail, the noticeable gleam in her eyes.
The real action starts when the sun goes down and the lights of South Siberian Summit flicker alive. Lola and Peggy march to the popular spot where dogs from each neighborhood gather for the games. Her eyes flash in competitive excitement and with Peggy by her side, she readies for the main event.
“Who’s up to challenge Lola the Indomitable?” someone yells, a streak of humor in their tone. The challenge hangs in the crisp night air, met by animated barks and yips of assent from the other contenders.
Lola, my gentle, fun-loving Lola, morphs into the graceful warrior. Her brown-spotted ears perk up and she leaps into action, her once softly wagging tail now a straight arrow. Whether it was a brutal round of tug-of-war till the sunrise or the mountain hike race that tested endurance, Lola never backs down.
Tired but triumphant, Lola and Peggy sneak off to their secret hideaway in Lower Golden Gate Gardens, their safe spot beneath the stars, replete with the day’s conquests. It’s almost dawn and Lola, her wild spirit tamed for the night, slips back through the doggy door, back to being just an Australian Bulldog, sprawled at the foot of my bed.
As I stroke her head, I spot the remnants of the Pawsburg games; the shadow of a victor, a smear of cheeseburger on her snout, and a leaf from Lower Gates clutched in Peggy’s mouth. I quietly laugh to myself.
No, Lola is no ordinary dog, she’s an adventurer, a friend, a competitor, a cheeseburger lover, and the undisputed champion of Pawsburg – and she’s mine, our little secret. How incredibly lucky I am to know Pawsburg’s games champion, my bold, loving, ever-adventurous Lola.
The End.
