The thing about Maxie, he loves his melody as much as he digs roast beef. A Boston Terrier with an appetite for both food and sound, a rare breed if ever there was one. Maxie was never one to laze around, always by the Poodle Pond or dining at Bow Wow Bistro, one of his favored haunts.

Everyone in Spencerville knew of the duet between Maxie, the effervescent Terrier, and Jazz, the stately cat. A kind of Lennon and McCartney of the pet world, if you ask me. They’d strut down the street, giving off Elton John vibes, minus the glittery outfit, of course.

Maxie, zealous as ever, suggested they form a band, naming it “The Squeaky Treats.” A fitting name, if you ask me considering Maxie’s flamboyant love for his squeaky chicken toy. The plan was to put on a show at Corgi Castle. Maxie had plans more grandiose than his stubby tail, but that’s what made him Maxie.

Things seemed to be shaping up well. Maxie was practising his bark-tones, Jazz’s purr forming the perfect harmony. That is until the day before the big show, Spencerville experienced its first snowfall. To anyone else, it was a mere weather change, but for our Terrier, snow was his silent nemesis. Fearful as a fix hound, Maxie refused to step out, let alone perform. Let’s just say, the future of “The Squeaky Treats” was hanging by a loose string.

That evening, as I headed to Tail Waggers for a bite, I bumped into Jazz, who seemed more perturbed than any cat I’d seen. “Maxie’s lost it!” she exclaimed, sweeping her tail in a way only a cat rattled beyond its whiskers could. I chuckled, got her a saucer of cream and sat myself down. “Well, you can’t let him give up now, eh?”

Jazz paused before replying, “He’s afraid, y’know? Maxie acts tough, but at his heart, he’s a softy. Scared of the shadow the snow casts for some reason. I can only imagine what’s going through his head.”

We hatched a plan over that cream saucer, deciding to appeal to Maxie’s love for the familiar. What if we recreated his favorite diving spots right in his own backyard? A bit of the sandy beach, a mock-up Poodle Pond, familiar sights to soothe his anxious heart.

After hours of hard work and a lot of digging, we managed to recreate Maxie’s happy places, or well, sufficient renditions anyway. We lured him out the next morning and introduced him to the new-old space.

Guess what? Our plan worked! Sensing the familiarity, he forgot all about the white blanket of fear that engulfed Spencerville. That evening, under the starry night, Maxie and Jazz delivered an echoing performance, purrs and barks in harmony. The sight was more glorious than anything you’d catch at the Woof and Whisker Wellness Center.

This was their moment, their very pet version of a High School Musical, just without the high school and heaps more fur. In the heart of Spencervile, where pets lived, laughed and performed, Maxie found his voice, his rhythm, and Spencerville found its beat. Beats that echoed in the small town, resonating through every pet paw and furry tail, telling tales of a brave Terrier and a robust team on a wild, frosty night. That, to me, will always be the legend of Spencerville.
