Back when the Mitchell family absently consigned themselves to slumber, the quaint familiarity of Cherryville enclosed upon itself. As moonlight softened the quiet periphery, a world unhinged from human note revealed itself – Pawsburg. Now there’s a town worth its howls in dog biscuits! Commanded by the paws, and of the paws, it’s a haven insulated by Eastern White Westie Woods and backed by the grandeur of Western Fawn Pug Palace.

With all due respect assigned to myself as your relater of happenings, it’s my duty to unveil a day in the life of the freshly pasted Crown of Pawsburg, Queen Truffles.

Eager to shed the quietude of Cherryville and the apron strings of affectionate Mr. Mitchell, Truffles would slink off under the hazy night’s blanket, the yellow duck toy clutched between sharp canines serving as her royal scepter. Companionship in these unfamiliar regal landscapes was afforded by her partner-in-crime, Muffin, the Labrador from the park. Together, we traversed the Lower Dalmatian Desert, and thickets of Westie Woods, an adventurous duo of purposeless purpose.

Queen Truffles’ coronation at the Fawn Pug Palace was nothing short of grand. The Tail Wagger’s Tailor had clothed her in a robe that echoed her sun-kissed fur and Best in Show Photography was commissioned to chronicle the celebrations. Yet, the crowning moment, quite literally, was the ceremonial adornment of the Bark Burger Crown. It was exquisite; an amalgam of impressive design and gastronomical prowess, but one couldn’t help but witness the Queen begrudging the glaring cucumbers perched as jewels.

Her rule was just as unconventional. She championed for dog rights and outdated leash laws, her bark carrying thunder across the Pawsburg Assembly. But, her subjects were happy, for what ruler promised a pizza party at Pup-Tastic Pizza on Tuesdays, and hosted feasts at the Chowhound Café on Fridays? A Golden Retriever certainly, but a Golden leader for sure too. I watched the festivities quietly, revelling in the comfort of knowing our affable Truffles reigned without cumbersome burdens, and yet wearing her crown with grace and dignity.

Embarking on mischief, donned in doggie regalia, our escapades were many. They were after all, the meat and bones of life in Pawsburg. But the transition from bark to speech was abrupt. The baying hounds and growling confidants were replaced by the accented voice of a familiar human chiming, “Morning Truffles! How’s my golden ball of sunshine today, hmm?”

And just like that, our carefree whispers of Pawsburg evaporated as sunlight breached Cherryville’s horizon. The crown was surreptitiously stashed, replaced by her well-worn collar. It was the end of a reign, rather the pause of one.

In the end, there were two worlds, starkly different, united by the unbeatable spirit of one single dog. And as I lay my head to rest, a familiar form of a luscious Golden Retriever strewn across my couch pulled a sigh of contentedness, the secrets of Pawsburg safely nestled within her sunshine-colored fur.
