Well, the morning Jasper and I awoke to the yipping yodels emanating from Poodle Pond, we had no inkling of the otherworldly extravaganza that was about to unfold. Picture it, the sun merely a dream, South Siberian Summit, a silhouette against the pre-dawn sky. It was from there the “visitors,” as I like to call them, made their grand, if startling, entrance.

You see, there’s quite nothing like the sight of shimmering ufo’s descending over the Shepherd Skyline to jostle a sleepy town into a hullaballoo of uncombed fur and howling confusion.

Jasper was onto it before any of us, his black ears perked up, one moment playing with his crinkly toy, and in the next, the fearless defender of Spencerville. Now, you should know, dear reader, Jasper’s not your average daily mutt. He’s a mystery wrapped in black and white fur, a puzzle-solving prodigy with the heart of a lion or least a very riled up Chihuahua. An Alien invasion? P’shaw! Just another day in the park for our Jasper.

Not that he was charging at the aliens, wagging tail and blazing fury. No, sir. There’s a strategic finesse to the way Jasper works, like a game of chess where he’s the black and white King. So, there we were, amidst panicking Pooches and the steadily increasing high-pitched yapping of our “visitors,” formulating a plan in the Groom Room – a dear hideout for Jasper, given how he loathed swimming and all water-related grooming rituals.

I suspect it was their decision to take over Doggy Donuts that really irked him. A man might mess with many things, but a dog’s donuts? It’s a declaration of war! With a twinkle in his eyes, I almost felt sorry for the E.T’s.

Being a dog of action, Jasper rounded up his crew of Spenceville’s finest – Gus, Alfie, and others. Operation liberate the Doggy Donut was swift and despite their sophisticated technologies, the “visitors” had vastly underestimated the power of a zealous group of canine comrades.

If you are picturing an all-out brawl complete with laser zaps and flying donuts, I regret to disappoint you. Jasper and the gang simply replicated the intense sonnet of snoring that Gus, the good old bulldog, released after his daily dose of Pupsicle Palace’s extra-cheese pizza. I tell you, it’s a sound to shake mountains.

The “visitors” couldn’t tolerate the canine chorus and hastily retreated. That day, we saw them ascend, taking off into the vanilla skyline, and they haven’t graced our doggy town since. Sitting on the South Siberian Summit after the dust had settled, Jasper and I watched the sunrise; a new day, peace restored.

An alien invasion could shake us, rattle us, grab our donuts away, but it could never break the spirit of Spencerville, because we have Jasper, a dog much too large for his humble size. And as his tail wagged, casting playful shadows in the morning sky, it was time for his reward – a car ride and extra cheese jerky treats. Yes, life was good in Spencerville.

So this is the tale of Jasper against the E.T’s, a tale as tall as Jasper himself could tell it. Because sometimes heroes are not clad in shiny armor, but in black and white fur, weighing only 11 pounds, and bearing an insatiable love for cheese.
