Lil Dot PawWord Story
“Hey Mama, chillin’ in doggie haven Spencerville, making pals and munchin’ on my fav chicken. Made peace with vacuums, kind of.. Missing our sunbathing and car-rides but these starry nights ain’t half bad! Love you and miss you – all’s well that ends well. Oh, I’m a Spencerville Diva now! – Lil Dot”
Right from the second I saw Springer’s Kennel, I knew that my time had come. I, Lil Dot, the English Bulldog, was ready for that great long walk into Spencerville. Legend has it, that’s where dogs head to when their time comes; a haven for pets, for the best and brightest of us all.
A beautiful morning it was when I trotted into the Happy Hounds Dog Walking shop. Greeted by my old pal Spencer, we headed towards the Maltese Meadow, our tails swishing in joyous syncopation. “Same old, Dot,” he said, looking at me with knowing eyes. I nodded, panting lightly from the exertion. A walk always did me good, I mused, ignoring my tired, aging paws that begged me to slow down.
Later in the day, at Sniff ‘n’ Snack, a bustling eatery nestled on the Lower Silver Siberian Summit, I shared my usual chicken meal with Fenway, Pearl, Zelda and others. The deliciousness of the dish highlighted by the camaraderie, the laughter, and the shared memories. Our tales of adventures echoed through the restaurant as we indulged in reminiscing about the old days.
The heart of Spencerville though, was the Doggy Depot. Run by my siblings – Bandit, Hans, King, and Hagan. It was the core of all the fun activities, a beacon of comfort for pets missing their owners. A safe haven until we are reunited. A sanctuary that eased the journey of growing up and ageing.
I remember this one time, I had a tiff with Russell. Over a silly squabble, revolving around who hated vacuum cleaners the most. It was at Whiskers and Wings, both of us barking ferociously. The outburst ended with me accepting my reign of fear over those noisy monstrosities. No banana bread or cookie consolation prize could mend the hurt I felt, the embarrassment I bore.
My days in Spencerville entailed more than just walks and snacks and squabbles. There was a deeper core to it all, a coming of age, a sense of finally finding a place of belonging, a way of dealing with loss and longing.
Late at night, as I laid under the star-speckled sky at the Silver Siberian Summit, Tanner and Chloe by my side, I knew this was exactly where I belonged. Sure, a part of me missed Judy; reminiscing about sunbathing in our resplendent backyard, those joyous car-rides, the thrill of mischief making. But another part of me heaved a sigh of relief. The cycle closed for Lil Dot, the pint-sized English Bulldog that once roamed the streets, now whiling away her time in Spencerville.
The familiar sounds of the tranquil night closed in, with a peaceful silence marking my journey, my progress, my life. A coming of age, if you will. Here I was, comfortably ensconced amongst friends, reveling in Spencerville, living my after-life as fully as my earth-stroll.
You see, Spencerville is more than a place; It’s where we find ourselves, understand ourselves and ultimately, forgive ourselves. Here, left to our thoughts and the fond memories of the faces we left behind, we somehow find peace. I am Lil Dot, and this is my story.
The End.
