Roberto Gordon Gau – we called him Gordon PawWord Story
“Hey family! Reliving all our Spencerville adventures. You know, the merry walks, hilarious disdain for strawberries, and all those bow wow burgers. Miss being your plump ball of joy, a bark away. Gordon in your heart is forever, remember? So here’s to eternal love and happy memories! – Chicken nugget”
“It could be that we all have our tales about Spencerville,” I chuckled to myself, after many a sunny afternoon spent watching my dear companion Gordon, the roly-poly Beagle, go about his merry ways. Now in Spencerville, his life bloomed with peculiar grandeur, much like his oversized ears which often flapped about in the wind, seemingly enthused by the endless mirth of the Eastern White Westie Woods.
Underneath the benign gaze of Shih Tzu Stadium, loved ones romped, joy decorated every bark and the pain of separation was but a speck of dust in the vast expanse of Spencerville’s comforting delusion. As I walked the cobblestone paths heart heavy with memories of Gordon, the rustling leaves whispered sagas of his solitude and the wind hummed his favorite songs. The Beagles Abby, Emma, and Quincy, along with Cede and Lexi, the Basset Hounds, often accompanied him, their camaraderie reminding me of pixies in a midnight dance.
The charming town bustled with vigilance, its establishments catering to the whims and fancies of its peculiar residents. I imagined Gordon sauntering into the bustling Bow Wow Burgers, a glint in his big, brown dreamy eyes, a profound determination set in his waddle as he sniffed out his beloved chicken and liver, tactfully steering clear of any clandestine strawberries.
O’ how Gordon loved his food, his girth a testament to his love for life’s flavors. But surprisingly, he never got his paws on strawberries, regarding them with a disdain that was comical to say at least. Perhaps he thought of them as tiny, red intruders that threatened to taint the pure flavors of his cherished meals.
Thinking of Gordon dapping his white feet into The Pampered Pooch Salon or him posing merrily against the lens in Best in Show Photography brought the oddest joy. The vivacity of his white-tipped, black tail wagged in the reflection of my laughter. His disdainful aversion for beach and the dog park somehow contorted into a tender fondness for the serene backyard of my heart.
I recalled our quiet conversations, his soothing gaze saying silent prayers for my well-being, reassuring me that anything that vacuumed away happiness or showered us with despair was just a passing phase. Love, indeed, was our own personal fiction, beautifully crafted in the realm of the paranormal. Tales of Spencerville were etched in the parchment of hearts waiting to be reunited, a mystical ballad sung for friends long gone. Our cheerful fugitives from reality.
Gone from my touch but forever a part of me, Gordon continues to be my eternal romance. Now I knew love had paw prints, it yawned, wagged its tail, and answered to the name of my dear tri-colored Beagle. It was our tales of Spencerville that bridged our separation – a world where he was just a bark away. The memory of him, of us together in Spencerville, was all it takes to melt the veneer of death and blink him back to life, in my dear and forever heart.
The End.
