Each night, as the last amber hues of the Californian sky fade away, and Jeff transitions from his recliner to his bed, I get hit by an undeniable pang of excitement. And the best part? I get to hang my investigative-coat with the letters D-U-S-T-Y embroidered on it, and venture into the doggy dreamscape known as Pawsburg.

Here’s one of those times when mischief was in the air and yet, how could I resist?

“Oi, Dusty!” Max’s bark echoed through the silent night, jolting me out of a most delightful grilled chicken dream. “C’mon, let’s scoot!”

Without a moment’s hesitation, and ignoring the leftover taste of the dream-chicken, I made way through the secret tunnel dug under the roses with Max’s morning breath filling the air around me.

Pawsburg! A sight to behold, shimmering under the glow of the Dog Star, Sirius. Max and I hustled past the bustling Bullmastiff Boardwalk and up Western Husky Hill, our paws crunching the gravel and the wind ruffling our fur, instigating in us a kind of anticipation only the night could offer.

Then it happened. As we trotted past Fawn Pug Palace, the silent growl of trouble echoed around old statue of Rover Rottweiler, the town’s very first mayor. Our great city was in danger! There was an evil villain afoot. Garfield, that cat who owned “Pawsome Pancakes,” had been stealing the city banners. A villainous act surely – each banner bore the scent of every good dog who had ever visited the city, a symbol of unity.

As the city’s self-nominated detective, I couldn’t sit still. We needed a plan. With Max panting beside me, eyes almost hidden beneath those heavy folds, I concocted the most brilliant plan in the history of dogkind.

Now, Garfield had an unhealthy love for artisanal donuts from “Doggy Donuts.” Ah, the lure of its sugary sweetness! So, we struck a deal with Joey, that greyhound who runs “Doggy Donuts.”

The next day, Garfield found in his special baker’s dozen a donut trapped with the scent of Pawsburg’s most delicious grilled chicken. The one thing guaranteed to send any dog’s tail into a high-speed wag frenzy. Well, every dog that isn’t a health-abhorring carrot-eater, that is.

Just as I had anticipated, Garfield couldn’t resist the temptation. The moment he bit into the donut, the stored scent filled the air and led every dog in Pawsburg straight to him.

Some called it deceit. I call it serving justice with a side of baked goods. Pawsburg commended me, Max sulking beside me, for saving the city banners. The red Labrador had struck again. And just as the first rays of the sun pierced the night, I made my way back home.

“Dusty!” Jeff’s voice echoed through the living room as I slipped into my spot beside the fireplace. “You and your adventures!” He tousled my fur, oblivious to the world-saving hero he had by his side. But oh well, that grilled chicken in the fridge was calling my name!

So, Pawsburg was safe once again, thanks to its resident detective. Just another night of heroism etched in the tail-tales of the city, ready to be told to the next gen pups. That, my friend, is the magic of Pawsburg.
