The summer was blistering; Pawsburg was simmering under a ferocious sun that made the entire town pant—quite literally—and endeavour to seek solace under scarce shadows. And in the thick of the heat wave, a catastrophe had struck Bulldog Bay. Information reaching me suggested a daring heist that saw the much loved, much visited, Pupperoni Pizza bereft of its famous Pepperoni pies. Naturally, it left everyone in town howling in despair.

I was Spencer – the relentless Miniature Schnauzer – and I was on a mission.

The sun had stopped being quite so fierce so, armed with my unyielding Squeaky and what remained of my chocolate puppuccino from The Bone Appetit, I decided to brave the heat and head straight towards the crime scene.

“Stolen, all the Pepperoni Pizzas…gone!” The owner, a portly Golden Retriever, was whimpering piteously behind the counter.

“Cheer up, old chap!” I said, patting his beefy arm. “We’ll sniff out the culprit, never you fear!”

If the presence of a hard-boiled detective—however short in height—offered some little consolation to the devastated owner, he did an admirable job hiding it. Coco, my usual sidekick, was prowling around on the looters’ trail, her greyish brown fur glinting in the afternoon light, while Black and White reclined regally on the counter – their sense of dejavu is quite astounding.

The clues were baffling. Crumbs of the stolen pizzas led us on a chase through the city. Through the arid landscape of Lower Dalmatian Desert, amidst the labyrinthine streets of Chihuahua Castle, and eventually down a sinister alley behind Spa for Paws. The adventure was nerve-wracking, and the desert ambience lent even more heat to the raging sun.

Eureka! A faint whine wafted into my ears from behind a fake grooming station. Judging by the twitching of Coco’s ears, she’d caught the sound too. After a nod between companions, we closed in on the suspicious site, ready to dispense canine justice.

Rounding the corner of the alley, we came face to whisker with the miscreants. A devious Tabby called Banjo and a sly Boxer named Bruiser – two petulant, town troublemakers. Surrounding them were the missing Pepperoni Pizzas, their spicy aura wafting towards us, igniting victory in our hearts, or maybe that was hunger.

“Busted,” I barked, advancing with Squeaky held high and proud. “Now, hand over the Pepperoni Pizzas. Do you have any idea how many tongues are hanging in anticipation?”

Banjo and Bruiser, caught red-pawed, could do little but step back and concede defeat. Applause echoed as news of captured thieves reached the town. That night, the citizens of Pawsburg congregated at Pupperoni Pizza, celebrating over slices of reclaimed pie, and bathing in the jubilation of justice served.

And so, went one of many adventures of Spencer – the intrepid Schnauzer with a nose for mysteries and a sworn love for Pepperoni Pizzas. This tale, like the rest, shall rise, like the crust of a good Pepperoni Pizza, basking in the oven of Pawsburg folklore, always remembered, always relished. Worth retelling…until the next adventure unfurls.
