Now, if you’ve met Charlie, you’d know exactly what kind of a nut might spring loose in the head of this adorable terrier. Fun-sized parcel of mischief, that’s the best way to describe him, in the manner of our town’s famed confectionery Kibble Cuisine’s caramel bombs. Just the right blend of sweetness and surprise.

It was during one of those glorious summer days when our owners, the humans, were away on their ‘business’ – whatever that might be – that Charlie decided it was high time to explore the wonder that is Pawsburg. We all heard tales, whispered down from one dog to the next, about the adventures awaiting there. For Charlie, however, the whispers about Pawsburg had swelled into a thunderous call.

Dawn broke, and everyone in Pawsburg from Bullmastiff Boardwalk to Maltese Meadow, looked towards their next meal and their next mischief. The best part about Pawsburg: you are free, you are unleashed.

Charlie and I found ourselves at the Fawn Pug Palace, where a lavish feast had been arranged. Looking back now, it may have been too much of a feast! With a twinkle in his eye, Charlie bet Buddy on who could eat the most from ‘Bow Wow Burgers’. Now, Buddy being an easily manipulated Labradoodle, accepted the challenge instantly.

Charlie’s cunning strategy was to zigzag among the tables in a particular rhythm. Distracting Buddy with some witty stories of our backyard adventures, gradually bewitching him into slowing down their eating pace. His punctuated narrative pattern, coupled with his vivid description of squirrel chases, was enough to achieve his aim – Buddy won alright, but in time, he fell into a food-induced stupor leaving behind half a plate.

Victory was so close, Charlie could taste it. Oh, wait. That wasn’t victory. That was the plate of leftover. He sprang forth, and with a silent but quick attack, jumped up to the plate and grabbed his stolen trophy, a colossal burger.

From the corner of his eyes, Charlie saw Buddy stirring. Panicked and overwhelmed, Charlie decided to make a run for it – a hilarious sight, a tiny Boston Terrier with a burger bigger than his own face.

Hardly did he know, Buddy stirred not from the need to claim his plate back, but from the intricate tale Charlie was weaving. It was a folklore in making – ‘The Terrier, the Burger, and the Pawsburg Plot’.

In the grand tale of Pawsburg, Charlie didn’t win anything meaningful, no medallions, no accolades. And yet, it was an epic day, and I wager he’d do it all again. The thrill wasn’t in winning, the thrill was in the plot, the manipulation, the running – evidence of his own clever little psyche against the world.

This flash of revelation hit me as I saw Charlie now, in our backyard, his rainbow rope forgotten, lost in the daydream of his adventure. His reputation as mischief-personified had only grown since, adding an extra layer of lushness to our everyday life. In Pawsburg, Charlie indeed was not an ordinary dog, he was a psychological weaver of thrilling tales.
