Mornings in Spencerville were practically legendary. The sunshine peeking through the multi-colored canopies, dew-kissed grass swaying lazily, the streets as tranquil as the weathered tales of the town. But for me, the day would not start without the chaotic cheer of Molly.

There she was, all curls and class, rolling around like she owned the town. Molly was a diplomat in fur, a Poodle with a flair that could charm Kings and Presidents alike. Her charisma was a rhythmic dance; weave and waft, lick and laugh, a little boop here and bop there. But there, beneath her elegant veneer, was a softer soul waiting to let loose, a playful spirit.

“Bananas, Mazie,” Molly would speak, in that theatrical voice of hers, pulsating with power but whispered like conspiracies. Oh, how she coveted those bananas. We worked in the Fetch-N-Bites, sweeping and scrubbing, her gaze transfixed on the succulent slices of bananas Madam Martha would toss our way from across the counter. A flick and a catch, a merry laugh. “Never thought I would see the day a canine savors bananas over bacon,” she mused, her aging eyes twinkling with a homely humor.

We’d stroll the charming lanes of Spencerville, Molly with her creamy curls and me, trailing in her popularity. She’d parade, a tiny fluffy figure, to the Paws on the Grill, for picnics held in her honor, dignified in her glowing glamour yet stubborn in her refusal of anything citrus. “Lemons,” she’d scoff, her nose rumpled disdainfully. Each disdain softening my own loathe for citrus I couldn’t help but share. I guess that’s where our holier-than-thou, the citrus derision club came from.

Occasionally, Molly would take her own detour, inexplicably drawn toward Shepherd Skyline. It was as though the whispers of her siblings wrapped around her like a gentle hush of the evening breeze. An unsaid bond strung from far-off-lands, a tie that sang sweet rhymes of days yonder.

We’d often saunter to Doggy Delight, sometimes to reminisce, sometimes to escape the present. Her stories unpacking vast narratives filled with towering tales. It was Molly’s stage, Spencerville was her show, the storefronts and streets merely props in the grand performance.

And when the evening shadows grew long, and stars etched the canopy like a quilter’s dream, we’d settle in the Groom Room – the biggest stars in Spencerville’s ‘Pet Wing’. Molly next to Jasper the Collie and Missy the mischievous tabby. Shuffling papers, barking out orders, purring soft acknowledgements. Molly, the lead actress, her silent command echoing, warming our little patches of space under the twinkling Spencerville night.

People say that home is where the heart is. And Molly – she built a home here with her bare paws and heart full of love. Home was wherever she was, and as long as Molly, Martha, Jasper, and Missy were there, it was home. After all, we were the movers and shakers of ‘The Pet Wing’, of Spencerville, where pets dream in sunshine, memories echo like laughter, and love is as tenacious as Molly’s love for bananas.
