The dawn breaks over the distant hills of Pawsburg, a melancholic stroke of orange against a graying sky. It might look peaceful if you didn’t know better. In the midst of it all, I wake, shaking off remnants of sleep that cling to my russet coat.

“Blue!” Rocky’s warning bark ripples through the hushed morning, snapping me back to reality. The post-apocalyptic world waits for no dog, not even for a groggy Dachshund-Labrador mix like me.

As pioneered by the deeds of the heroes in ‘The Walking Dead’, we pets navigate a similar landscape, albeit with a wagging tail and a robust spirit. We have adapted, not without difficulty, to a world with fewer peanut butter jars and more squirrels.

My usual playmates are scattered about Pawsburg, seeking shelter in unlikeliest places. From Collie Canyon to Bulldog Bay, from Lower Golden Gate Gardens to each forsaken corner of Fetch! Toys and Treats – it’s as if everyone has disappeared. The usually bustling Bow Wow Bistro now only wafts with the ghostly aroma of roast chicken, a torment to my salivating tongue. Every whiff fills my heart with nostalgia and stomach with a gnawing ache.

However, this isn’t a day for wallowing in memories!

Making my way through the eerily silent streets, I gather my posse. Rocky, panting yet resolute, joins me at once. Whiskers is harder to persuade, her round green eyes cataloging my every move with suspicion. Still, I know, she will follow. She always does.

We march with a purpose, our goal being none other than Pet Partners Pet Supplies, now our sanctuary. Beyond its welcoming doors lie stacks upon stacks of much-needed food and everyday doggy essentials. But it’s not without challenges. Its guarded by an army of rogue squirrels, their tiny rodent brains corrupted by hunger and survival instinct.

Much has changed since humans vanished, but not the core spirit of Pawsburg. We stand united, ready to face whatever comes our way. Our every step echoes the audacious spirit of ‘The Walking Dead heroes, our courage as potent.

We launch our attack at dusk when their guard is down, employing a strategy devised with painful experience and innate cunning. The fight is fierce, desperate but somewhere in-between, I spot it. An unopened peanut butter jar beside a torn open bag of catnip. We emerge victorious, our spirits soaring, echoing a triumph of unity over chaos.

As I return to the gathered pets, victorious and peanut butter jar in mouth, I cannot help but feel thankful, both for the gift in my mouth and the fur-covered crowd before me. Even in a world without humans, we’ve found a strange harmony. The sense of divinely planned disorder has only magnified the spirit of Pawsburg.

Tomorrow, a new challenge awaits. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll find clues about where our humans disappeared to. But for now, we are survivors. We are Pawsburg, and hope tastes a lot like peanut butter.
