From where I stood, wagging in the morning breeze just by the entrance of the Upper Collie Canyon, I could see Koda, my dearest fellow in Pawsburg, his droopy gold-brown eyes surveying the serene valleys, a stark contrast to the imminent disaster that awaited us. Us dogs of Pawsburg, we’ve faced our battles and wild adventures, but nothing like this.

“Koda!” Bruno bounced towards us, virtually embodying his heedless German Shepard spirit. “Did you see the news on Whiskers and Wings’ billboard?”

News on a billboard? Notorious for their bizarre method of communication, Whiskers and Wings displayed headlines on a giant billboard perched on the roof, visible to us from across Pawsburg. A shadow fell on Koda’s and my face as we tilted our heads, our eyes taking in the ominous news. “**Impending Meat Shortage**.” The words took a moment to register before hitting us like a ton of bricks.

Just as we were digesting the disastrous news, Muffin galloped towards us, his tiny spaniel body trembling with urgency, “Koda, it’s about the Bark and Bites restaurant! They… they just ran out of grilled chicken!”
