The Nose Knows: A Beagle’s Tale of Heroism and Romance in Pawsburgh: A Walter PawWord Story
Hey Mom,
Just had to share: tonight I channeled my inner superhero, The Nose, in Pawsburgh. Sniffed out trouble at Jade Junction and saved Damsel the Frenchie from a sticky situation, literally! Super-sneeze to the rescue. Don’t worry, saving Pawsburgh one sniff at a time is all in a night’s work for your son. Also, made sure not to miss dinner. 😉
Hugs and head pats,
Walter Matthau
Picture this: it’s an ordinary evening in Pawsburgh and here I am, Walter, sneaking off to Jade Jack Russell Junction—the place where the magic truly begins. It’s not just any ordinary evening, mind you, because when the moon waxes poetic overhead, I shed my beagle-ness and become… The Nose.
It’s a talent that came whispering to me one midnight—a scent above all scents, an ability to sniff out trouble with a snout that could make bloodhounds hang up their leashes in defeat. I’ve saved countless picnics from the brink of disaster, my nose twitches spelling the difference between a perfectly baked quiche and a charcoal brick.
Anyway, back to the Junction and my clandestine foray into superheroism. It’s bustling tonight, dogs of every breed milling about, but I’ve got no time for pleasantries. I’ve caught a whiff of something… ominous. It’s faint, a trouble on the breeze, and it reeks of danger.
“Evening, Walter,” Benny the Boxer calls out from Setter’s Steakhouse, his jowly face upturned in that familiar smile. “Fancy a bite?”
“Can’t, old pal,” I reply with a half-smile. “Duty calls.” Off I bound, past Mastiff’s Meals and right by Paw Pad Thai—their green curry aroma a siren call to my already preoccupied olfactory senses.
Now, as The Nose, I’ve developed certain rituals. Little tricks of the trade. Before embarking on my heroics, I stop by Woof and Whisker Wellness Center for a quick sniff of their revitalizing aromas; it’s like a shot of espresso for my sniffing prowess.
Duty, the ever-frolicsome pup that it is, leads me to Weimaraner Woods. It’s secluded, leafy, and tonight, shrouded in a mist that doesn’t quite smell like fog. My beagle senses boom with alarm. Something’s not right.
A rustling from the underbrush, a flash of fur—poof. That’s when I see her, Damsel, the French Bulldog with eyes that charm and a bark that could cut glass. True to form, she’s tangled up in something rather unsavory—a very real, very sticky spider web… and this isn’t part of her Halloween get-up.
“Hi, Walter,” she pants, trying to wriggle without getting stickier. “Little help?”
Call me sentimental but seeing Damsel in distress plucks at my heartstrings. What kind of hero would I be to ignore it? “Hold still,” I say, pawing at the stubborn silk. “The Nose is on the case.”
Extraction is delicate work, and oh, did I mention I have an actual superpower? Yeah, that’s right. A single prodigious sneeze of mine can clear a room—or, in this case, decimate an oversized spider web.
“Here goes nothin’,” I mutter, blueprints of bravery sketched out in my head. My nose twitches, nostrils flare, and a-choo! The sneeze launches like a bark in the night, disintegrating the web and leaving Damsel free.
“Walter, you’re my hero!” she exclaims, leaping into my arms.
Off we trot to Cavalier Cove to celebrate her freedom. The water glimmers under the moon—a mirror to our own relief—and Damsel, warmed by the camaraderie of our adventure, decides to regale the tail to our owners. “You’ll make it sound thrilling,” I tell her, “but leave out the sneeze. No one wants to hear about snot in a superhero story.”
As our evening wraps up, a paw-signal shoots into the sky—a beacon for The Nose. Looks like my night’s just getting started. But for now, under this hush of evening, my four paws fit perfectly against the cooling sand, lined up next to hers, like every good sidekick’s should.
The End.
