My name is Sassy, and if you were to glimpse me in passing, you’d see a Golden Retriever with a heart as open as the sky above this enchanted town. But let me tell you, there is more bark to this day than what first meets the eye.

It started with the usual cheer, a rambling run across Hound Heights, which ought to have been no different than the jolly jogs of yore. Only today, Max, the feisty little Dachshund, sported a limp as conspicuous as a cat in a kennel club. Bella eyed him with her pitbull furrows, concern knitting her brows beneath her fur.

Laboradors! Always thinking they know best. But when it came to medicine, Dr. Sniffer could unearth a flea from a haystack. And as Bella and I watched—a nurse and anesthesiologist, respectively—he ascertained the problem.

“A sprain, no reason to sound the alarms,” Dr. Sniffer declared. But the alarm in Max’s eyes begged to differ. Bella nudged him gently, a kind of canine comfort that spoke volumes more than words.

We took an oath here in Pawsburgh—to stretch beyond the gardens of Papillon Promenade, to delve deeper than the depths of Chowhound’s Chophouse’s savory bowls. We were here to bandage, to heal, to fetch back the spirits of our furry companions.
