Episode One: The Most Eligible Bark-chelor in Town

Graci here, taking you fur-first into the social scramble that is Spencerville’s very own “The Pet Bachelor.” You might think that just because we’ve all crossed that proverbial rainbow bridge, emotional entanglements would be passé, but you’d be barking up the wrong tree.

You see, I find myself at the center of attention in Beagle Beach, owing perhaps to my charming heart-shaped ocular accessory. I’m not one to brag, but when your coat looks like someone played connect-the-dots with the night sky, you certainly get noticed.

The show’s producers thought it would be quite the romp to have the most eligible pets of Spencerville compete for my affections. And by “compete,” I mean attempt to impress me with feats of athletic prowess at Shih Tzu Stadium, culinary adventures at Fetch-N-Bites, and, if they’re feeling particularly brainy, a round of trivia at Bark ‘n’ Roll.

Max’s opening gambit—a hundred-yard sprint through Collie Canyon—was met with a polite yet non-committal wag from yours truly. I mean, diligence in squirrel patrol is one thing, but where’s the sophistication, the je ne sais woof?

Bella, the perennial racer, thought speed was the key to my heart. A rapid chase ensued, peppered with short yips of joy, and to her credit, gave me a modest rush. Yet while the wind in my fur is delightful, Bella failed to realize that it is the serenity of the early morning walks I crave, not the breakneck pace of them.

Then entered Duke, ever the strong silent type, his mere presence evoking memories of Jamie, with a subtle undernote of that old, frayed rope we used to battle over. He presented me with a baby carrot, laid at my paws with a grace worthy of a knight presenting a sword to his queen. His tactics spoke volumes in a language only we understood.
