So it goes, in Spencerville, where the sun always shone like polished coins tossed into a fountain of endless wishes. I’m Blaze, by the way. Dogs don’t care for last names, but if we did, I’d fancy something like…Blaze Canis Maximus. Has a ring to it, don’t you think?

Life in Spencerville is like a tennis ball – full of bounces and unexpected turns. In Shepherd Skyline, you could hear the pitter-patter of paws against cobblestones, a canine symphony under the baton of chance. That was where I lived, in a big old house with a porch that wrapped around like a hug.

We were the motley crew of tails and tales. There was Whiskers, the greyhound, sleek as a bullet train; old Beagle Bailey, whose stories were like maple syrup – sweet and slow; and me, Blaze, the keeper of the peace and the occasional thief of hearts.

A typical day? Well, I woke to the smells of Bow Wow Bistro – they know their way around a grill, trust me. My day’s mission was outlined clearly: sniff, patrol, play, eat, nap – not necessarily in that order.

But this particular dawn brought with it a breeze scented with change. A kitten had joined our Spencerville populace, confused by the lack of yarn and indifferent to bones.

“Living together won’t be a cat-astrophe,” Whiskers joked, his laughter trailing behind him like a slipstream. Old Beagle Bailey grumbled something about “whippersnappers” – he treated words like hard candies, rolling them around for a while before letting them out.
