I strut down the hall of Paws Grey, my black and white coat groomed to a glossy sheen that would surely have the folks at the Pampered Pooch Salon nodding in respect if they weren’t, you know, a bunch of cats. But let’s not chase tails here; we have more pressing matters. Who am I kidding? When don’t we?

It’s an unspoken rule in Spencerville that, while we wait for that blissful reunion with the hoomans, we’ve got to keep each other’s spirits up. And let me tell ya, running the ER at Paws Grey is like… is like herding cats. Only some of the cats are dogs, and instead of herding them, you’re more trying to, well, save their nine lives. Or however many they’ve got left.

Today’s the day I’m in charge. The Big Cheese, the Top Dog, the—ugh, whatever you want to call it. And our first case walks in—okay, more like stumbles in—a Doberman named Duke with a wonky paw. Duke’s a regular, robust rookie at Western Husky Hill, but today, his limp was spoiling his rugged charm.

“Duke, my man!” I greet him with my usual cheer, hiding my concern. “What’d you do, try to high-five a cactus?”

He growls a laugh—it kind of sounds like a sneeze, but I’ll take it. “Something like that. Tried to show those new pups how to tackle the obstacle course and landed on my pride instead of my paws.”

We x-ray him, a quick tango with technology that leaves us both dizzy. Turns out, it’s a fracture—nothing a cast and some good ol’ Spencerville rest can’t fix.

But that’s the easy part. As the day spirals, I encounter Gertie the gossiping Goldendoodle snout deep in The Cat’s Meow Sushi, allergic reactions galore. Then there’s Reggie the Retriever who decided Bullmastiff Boardwalk was the perfect place for a taste test of things-that-should-not-be-eaten. My nose wrinkles just thinking about it.

Through it all, I’m leading my pack of pet professionals with the quiet confidence of an animal who thrives on simplicity. Which means, keeping my stethoscope untangled and my tennis ball within sight for stress relief.

When not saving the world—or at least, the tails of Spencerville—I unwind with Abby and Pebbles on the lawn out back. We swap war stories about our day, me leaving out the noisy parts since loudness causes me to jump more than the price of biscuits at Bone Appetit.

In the quiet of the afternoon sun, a sense of contentment washes over me. My friends are here, our health is in check (thanks to yours truly), and I have a home where I can truly let my fur down.

Tonight, I’ll trot home to my humble Spencerville digs, eat a well-deserved dinner of yogurt with a side of cherry tomatoes—don’t judge, it’s a thing—and dream of mountain adventures and tennis ball conquests.
