Name’s Mr. Truck, and I’m as bulldog as they come — loyal as a shadow at noon and just as steady. I woke up to the tickling light of dawn, which had the decency to slip through the curtains without bringing any of that dreadful rain along with it.

I stretched out on my bed, each muscle flexing like the pros you see on those weightlifting shows. I gave my beloved deflated basketball a customary nudge with my nose — it’s our secret handshake, you could say. Breakfast came and went, a non-event for an undiscerning eater like me. But everything changed when I stepped paw into Ruby Rottweiler Ridge. You see, Ruby Ridge, as we locals fondly call it, is usually a quiet spot, perfect for a reflective canine like me.

That’s why I knew something was amiss the moment that silence was broken by a ruckus I could only describe as a hundred cans in a metal grinder. I turned the corner and saw it: a rogue band of alley cats had descended on Mastiff’s Meals, and from the look of things, they were after the secret recipe for their famous Liver Lollipops.

Now, Pawsburgh might be a magical place where us dogs rule the roost, but it’s got rules. The first of which is: no cat invades on our turf, especially not on my watch. And when it comes to keeping the peace, well, that’s when the pet avengers come in. Sister Sadie, a soul as gentle as a summer breeze but fluent in ancient doggy martial arts, was the first one I alerted, courtesy of the HowlerPhone hidden under the ridge.

Big Al – whose bark can shatter glass (and that’s on a good day) – got the signal next. We rendez-grewled at Pomeranian Park because if there’s one place where a dog can think, it’s there, amongst the smell of fresh-cut grass and trees with stories to tell.

We needed a plan. Something smart, something subtle. With Sister Sadie’s brains, Big Al’s brawn, and my heart, we were ready for anything. A stealthy approach was out, not with Big Al panting like a steam train, so we went with the diversion tactic.

And what better place for a ruse than Newfoundland Nook? While Sadie and Al staged a faux fight about who lost the last game of Frisbee (for the record, it was Big Al), I ambled into Mastiff’s Meals — a bulldog in sheep’s clothing — looking for all the world like I was just there for a treat.

The cats, ever curious creatures, ventured out to see the commotion, leaving just a sole guard. Now, don’t be fooled by my stout frame — I’m light on my paws when the occasion calls for it. With a swift roll and a well-timed snort, I swiped the Liver Lollipop recipe right from under his whiskered nose.

The alley cats, realizing their plan had gone south like geese in winter, scattered to the winds. The recipe was back in safe paws, and Pawsburgh’s palate was secure once more.

As the sun dipped behind the skyline, I made my way back, my friends by my side, to Canine Kabobs, because what’s a victory without a little indulgence? Rain never did come that day, but friendship and bravery rained supreme in Pawsburgh. Later, back in my own backyard, I curled up, my deflated basketball resting between my paws, and whispered tales of our adventures into its rubber folds.
