“Olive, you’re on in five!” barked Charlie, his beagle eyes wide with the pressure of our imminent performance. Spencerville was abuzz with excitement for the annual Pet School Musical, and our band – The Howling Hearts – had been practicing every day in the shadow of Poodle Pond.

My ears perked up as I straightened my bow, the stage calling to me like the savory whisper of chicken and rice. “Ready as I’ll ever be,” I replied, the metaphorical stagefright nipping at my heals like the playful offspring that once bounded in my footprints.

I trotted over to where old Rufus sat, his deep Labrador gaze holding the calm of collected years. “What if they don’t like it, Rufus? What if my voice cracks or I step on a tail?”

“Hush now,” he rumbled gently. “We’ve wagged through worse. Just remember why we’re doing this.”

Images of Mrs. Finch’s smile, the undying spirit of adventure that coursed through Spencerville, and the rubber chicken that lay silent in my chest swirled in my mind. This wasn’t just about the music or the performance.
