An escapade? Certainly. How so, you ask? Well, it all began as I trotted over to The Doggy Depot for my nightly crunch-time session with a new batch of dog biscuits. You could say I’m a connoisseur of cookies, but to my astonishment, not a single Veggie Bone was to be found on the shelves.

You know me, not one to let a mystery go unsniffed. And so, I sniffed. From the scents of Spaniel Springs to the odors of Diamond Doberman Dunes, I sniffed. Piggy, that stout-hearted Beagle, beaming by my side as we canvassed the corners of Pawsburg. “What say, Piggy, a bone burglar among us?” I asked in jest, but even jesting carries a whiff of possibility.

Our first stop was Corgi’s Crepes, where the aroma of batter sizzled in the air like a summer symphony. “Heard about the heist?” I inquired, with a grin so wide I could’ve swallowed the shop. A terrier behind the counter wagged her tail sideways, a sure sign of distress in these magical parts. “Bones begone since dawn!” she exclaimed, each word garnished with a morsel of dread.

Now, with the moon as our meager lamp, we marched to Malamute Mountain, a sublime spot where shadows stretched like dough and secrets nestled between the rocks. An unscheduled stop? Perhaps. But ’twas here we espied the first clue—a Veggie Bone wrapper, mocking us with its emptiness.

And there it was—the Vanishing Veggie Bone, in the paws of none other than Detective Duchess. She offered us a tale of twisted tags and misdelivered treats, a bureaucratic bungle at The Doggy Depot. The Veggie Bones were there all along, hastily shelved amidst the Puppy Patties.

In the end, the riddle was not what it seemed—no pilferer had purloined our precious provisions. We exchanged glances and chuckles, then joyously jaunted back to town, and in true Pawsburg fashion, we celebrated the unvanished Veggie Bone with a feast at Doggie Diner.
