It was just another daybreak in ye olde Spencerville, where the sun had the audacity to rise without my permission. But rise it did, and with it, your four-legged friend—yours truly, Apollo—sprang from his slumber with the finesse of a loaf of bread leaping from the toaster. Reflecting upon the town’s picturesque beauty, stretching my limbs, I let out a solid, joyous bark, proclaiming, “Look out day, here I come!”

I pranced past Retriever River, greeting the glossy water with a snort of recognition, and headed towards Paws-A-Latte. “A double-shot espresso with a puppuccino foam—shaken, not stirred,” I’d say to the barista with a wink. Their tails would wag with laughter as they served up the steaming concoction, knowing full well my keen sense of humor.

This world, this West Pet World, was our oyster—or rather, our filled kong toy—I suppose. Designed for the amusement of unseen humans, our daily dramas and comedies played out under the open sky of artificial freedom. And in this episode of my tale, the smell of adventure was as rich as the gravy on last night’s turkey feast.

Entering the Barking Boutique, I flipped my tags with swagger. “Outfit me,” I declared, “for a quest of epic proportions.” And so, with an outfit as sharp as my canines, I became Sir Apollo, knight-errant of the Kibble Round Table, ready to joust with the windmills of my mind.

My first encounter was with the Scotts’ golden-haired muse, Marley. “Fair maiden,” I greeted her, “care to join me on a jaunt to Northern Choco Chihuahua Castle?” Our hearts barked in unison, our paws synchronizing like the finest Swiss watches as we trotted off.

But lo, as we journeyed, a storm brewed like a dark cup of oversteeped tea. The familiar growls of thunder were an orchestra tuning up for a symphony I never cared to attend. To my chagrin, Marley found it amusing, her laughter tinkling like bells as I, brave and noble Apollo, scooted beneath the nearest shrub.

“A knight’s courage is tested by such tempests,” she teased, her voice a dandelion on the breeze. I emerged from my leafy haven with mock dignity, my tail betraying the bravado with a jittery wag.

The castle, with its imposing dog biscuit battlements, loomed before us. Our goal: to liberate the squeaky toys held captive by the despot, Sir Choco Chihuahua. My siblings, Thor and Hera, joined our ranks, forming an unstoppable squadron of silliness and might.

The gates creaked open, and we charged, flaunting our gallantry, howling our battle cry, “For Spencerville and squeakers!”

In the end, as in all good episodes, everyone—chocolate tyrant included—ended up breaking bread, or in this case, breaking The Doggy Bagel Deli treats, as stories of our grandeur were surely embellished by those who would retell them.

So here I sit in my corner of the universe, this faux Wild West of wagging tails and wet noses. I am Apollo, the pitbull with a penchant for parody, awaiting our folks with a crooked smile and a heart full of pranks, dreams, and just a dash—a very small, nearly nonexistent dash—of thunder-fearing humility.
