**Waffles and the Case of the Missing Mr. Duck** – Waffles PawWord Story
Hey Mom! Just wanted to let you know I’ve been quite the hero today—chased off a sneaky raccoon, found little Timmy’s lost baseball, and even managed to cheer up the old lady next door with my antics. All in a day’s work for your favorite pooch! 🐾
Love,
Wafflette
The sun was rising lazily over Upper Black Bulldog Bay, casting a golden hue that shimmered off the water, making it look like the entire bay was a liquid treasure chest. Not that I had eyes for treasure chests, mind you; I, Waffles, the little foxy Pomeranian, had a more pressing matter at hand. Or paw. Whatever.
I ambled down Waggly Way, the main thoroughfare that stretched through Spencerville, using my best sleuthing skills. You see, I wasn’t just any dog here. I was the town’s detective, a cheerful and bright-eyed gumshoe tasked with solving whatever puzzle came our way. And Spencerville, a paradise for pets, had its mysteries. Today, it was about dear old Mr. Duck – one of my favorite toys who’d mysteriously disappeared without a quack.
My playful nature often had me tearing through the house, much to Mom’s delight. But the moment I noticed Mr. Duck was missing, my loyal and protective instincts kicked in. He had to be somewhere, and I could count on a paw’s worth of companions to help out.
First stop, Red Beagle Beach. A good swim usually shook loose some clarity, and with any luck, I’d stumble upon a clue. The sand felt warm beneath my claws as I splashed into the shallows, energetic waves batting against me playfully. I emerged with a shake, scattering droplets like morning dewdrops, but no sign of Mr. Duck. Not even a feather.
Next, to The Barkery, for a little sustenance. An intrepid detective must keep his energy up, after all. Milton, the top chef, whipped up some steak and chicken nuggets – just how I liked it. As I munched thoughtfully, the scent of sizzling meat mixing with the salty sea air, I couldn’t help but ponder: who would want to make a duck vanish?
Up ahead loomed the dilapidated yet very chic Wagging Tail Bookstore. Perfect place for second-hand gossip and maybe, just maybe, a clue. As I stepped inside, Cookie the black and white tuxedo cat, who had a soft spot for books and sunbeams, sashayed over.
“Waffles, darling,” she began, a purr in her voice, “whatever brings you here on this fine day?”
“Mr. Duck’s gone missing, Cookie,” I replied, a worried furrow creasing my brow – or it would have if not for my perpetually cheerful Pomeranian face. “Have you seen or heard anything?”
Cookie’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. “Why, Steely the Pitbull was mumbling something about feathered friends when I last saw him at Pup-Tizers.”
Aha! Steely it was then. I thanked Cookie and bounded out, tail wagging in earnest as an energy burst shot through me.
Steele was lounging by the pool, his grey and white coat shimmering in the noonday sun. “Steele, buddy,” I panted, catching my breath, “have you seen Mr. Duck?”
Steele chuckled, a deep sound like gravel. “Yeah, Waffles. I saw Spencer, the Shiba Inu, prancing around with it near Fawn Pug Palace.”
Spencer. Mischievous little rascal, he’d always had a penchant for pranks. Just the previous winter, he’d buried my nose in the snow, only for me to flip out with the joy of an unexpected snowy plunge. I darted to the palace, not bothering to knock as I barged into one of the pavilions.
There he was, proudly showcasing my beloved Mr. Duck to a gathering of admiring pups.
“Spencer,” I barked, “that’s my toy!”
“Oh, Waffles,” he replied, unfazed, “I didn’t mean any harm. Just thought Mr. Duck could use a little parade. Here, take him.”
Relief washed over me as I took Mr. Duck back. “A parade’s fine,” I said, “but don’t go duck-napping again.”
With mystery solved and toy reclaimed, I wandered over to The Fetching Feline Pet Emporium to pick up a treat for my efforts. The proprietor, a giggly Persian named Mitzi, always had the best chew toys.
By the time the sky turned into a canvas of twilight hues, I was back home, snuggled up with Mr. Duck and Rainbow Star, contemplating the day’s adventure. I knew that up here in Spencerville, I wasn’t just waiting for Mom; I was living the life of a detective, solving puzzling cases, and keeping my little world in order until we could be together again. Miss you, Mom, I yawned, nuzzling into my cozy little bed, until tomorrow’s mystery awakens.
