Chapter One: The Bark Burgers Caper

Every dog has his day, but for me, Hercules, every day is an adventure, especially here in wild, woolly Pawsburg. Like any self-respecting Bulldog, I cannot resist the smell of a good mystery, and the aroma in the air today was a prime cut of enigma. I picked it up during a romp at Beagle Beach, got a stronger whiff at the Lower Silver Siberian Summit, and by the time I arrived in the heart of town, the scent was practically screaming: “Hercules, get your paws on this!”

Bark Burgers was unusually quiet when I trotted in. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not one for bustling environments, but the silent tension was like a bath-time-come-early. Not a sound, save for the lone cook flipping patties – much less lively than my toy, the name of which you’re not privy to just yet.

It’s not like Pawsburgians to pass on a Bark Burger on a sunny day. Curiouser and curiouser. I tapped my detective’s hat (a rakish Fedora picked up at Fetch! Toys and Treats), got into work mode, which doesn’t really differ from play mode but sounds far more professional.

Right off the bat, I deduced a strong lack of ketchup. But what was really missing here were my friends, the lively coterie that is the lifeblood of Pawsburg, was conspicuously absent. That’s when doggy intuition kicked in. They must be in some kind of pickle, minus the aforementioned ketchup.

Their collective absence stuck out like a banana in a meat shop. I, Hercules, am no fan of bananas. Now, delivery personnel on the other hand, those folks and I have a history. A well-timed growl can spook even the heartiest of them. Using this to my advantage, I decided to pay The Pawsome Pet Pharmacy a visit, their delivery schedule was as predictable as my disdain for bath-time.

“Woof,” I greeted Chip, the English Spaniel. We regard each other with a high degree of mutual respect, often marred by a slight air of silliness. Following the code, he offered me a treat, which I declined, “No meat today, thanks.” His furry eyebrows furrowed in concern or confusion. Hard to say with Spaniels.

“Delivery truck never showed, did it?” I blurted, ignoring niceties. Chip whimpered affirmatively. The mystery meat, now marinated in suspense, was reaching a boiling point. Incredibly, I had stumbled upon a town-wide crisis, the kind I munch on for breakfast, routinely. Where are my friends, and what has this meat-less mystery got to do with them? Intrigue and I, old friends or enemies, depending on who you ask, were off to a running start.

“Well,” I self-monologued for dramatic flair, “I think it’s time I took a trip to Pet Partners Pet Supplies… They’re bound to know something, or at the very least, they’d better.”

The sun set on Pawsburg, casting long, paw-shaped shadows. Chapter One, an overture to what promised to be a ruff tale of suspense, meat mysteries, missing friends, and one obstinate Bulldog’s quest for, well, normalcy, was drawing to a close. But as they say in Pawsburg… every dog has his day.
