As I made my way across the audiDogually pleasing Pawsburg, my senses were assaulted by the exhilarating aroma coming from Chow Hound Café. But, before any bot, human, or pooch asks, no, the name Chow Hound does not mean they serve Chinese cuisine or dogs for that matter. Then again, knowing Pawsburg, I wouldn’t put anything past us. The café was known to serve dishes with such complicated names that even the finest linguist would meet his Waterloo.

Now, I’m not your regular foodie. I’m a bulldog. More distinguished. Less drooling. My name’s Bruno. Canine Officer Bruno, they call me out here in Pawsburg- the town where dogs loosed when their humans snoozed.. quite literally.

Today was no ordinary day. I had in my possession- the squeaky rhino. The most coveted toy in all of Pawsburg. And wouldn’t you know it? I only had to go through eight garbage bins and three fire hydrants to find it. I was about to let loose the battle cry for an epic playtime when an uncanny whiff hit my nostrils. Spicy. It was chili, I knew it! My nostrils tingled uncomfortably and I briskly turned around, leaving the rhino behind. Catch me sniffing chili, and you might as well start planning my next rebirth.

I could always count on the soothing taste of ambrosial cottage cheese from Yappy Yogurt to lift my spirits. The only problem was that the joint swarmed with hounds that could send me back into another life with their god-awful breath. Note to dogs everywhere: hygiene isn’t just a human thing.

As I leisurely licked my tub of cottage cheese, I caught sight of my motley crew at The Wagging Tail Bookstore. Daisy, flaunting her spots at the Thrillers section; Oliver, serving his mischievous grin among the Children’s Fantasy books; and Luna, the old Labrador engrossed in some yesteryear’s tale, no doubt.

I’d planned to head straight to my sanctuary, the quaint dog park by Corgi Castle, and claim my dominion over the unclaimed tennis ball – my battle-worn partner in many an adventure.

That tennis ball? It had seen better days. But aren’t we all a little ragged around the edges?

The park was unusually empty. “Party at Bark and Bites?” I wondered aloud. Nevertheless, I staked my claim under the elm tree that stood tall and proud in memories we’d all grown to cherish. There, I let my gaze wander, watching the world continue in its relentless swirl. Unaware of a bulldog’s life, his fears of the spicy chili, and his love for ambrosial cottage cheese. Life, as they say, goes on. Whether you’re a Detective Bulldog or not.

I stifled a laugh (if dogs could laugh, remember?). It was just another day in the life of Bruno, Canine Detective of Pawsburg, loyal comrade of squeaky rhinos, and earner of the title “Greatest Chili Detective (Avoider)” ever to have lived. I didn’t choose the bulldog life, ladies and gents. The bulldog life chose me.
