The summer’s sunlight dissolved into an autumn-eyed dusk in Pawsburg, a covert haven to which we dogs would unfailingly scamper off to take refuge from our doting but somewhat overbearing human companions. I, Gordon, was no exception.

I found myself, as I often did after sundown, at Bone Appetit, my favorite chill-out spot in town. Genuine steak – the kind that made my tongue dance in delight and tail wag with joyous rhythm – was the leading assailant on my self-control. I could absolutely go bonkers for a slice of that heavenly protein. If heaven were real, it would surely rain steaks. That thought had me grinning from ear to fur-covered ear.

The ambiance was pawfect for my dramatic flair. The lights were dimmed, and every nook echoed the soft sniff and munch of young pups and wise old hounds. Weaving through the crowd I spotted Missy, my dearest companion, bathed in the golden glow of the veteran chandeliers.

“No broccoli tonight, Gordon?” she asked, her voice a thrilling melancholy, her golden eyes twinkling mischievously.

“No thank you!” I retorted, feigning disgust. Broccoli was the mortal enemy standing revoltingly green between me and my steaks. Missy adored it, though why she ever did was beyond my comprehension.

Later that night, with the fresh night wind tickling our faces and curling around our bodies, we left the tantalizing warmth of Bone Appetit behind and ventured out into the open. Collie Canyon, with its stunning topography and true-to-life homages to dog bones etched onto its cliffs, was quietly waiting for its nocturnal guest.

This was our routine. A scrumptious meal, a casual walk, and then, under the star-strewn Pawsburg sky, we would find ourselves at Western Labradoodle Lake. The reflective surface of the lake was like a giant mirror, the quiet starlight echoing the serenity of my adventurous spirit. That night, however, fate had other plans.

I heard a rustle, the kind of rustle that chilled your bones and adored your nightmares. Something was amiss. Pawing Missy away, I closed in on the noise. Snapping twigs, muttered howls in the wind – my curious instincts were on overdrive. All thoughts of our peaceful routine were forgotten; tonight, my dear Pawsburg had served me a delicious plate of mystery, with a side of adrenaline, a thrilling distraction from the ordinary night.

Dawn was breaking when I finally got to the bottom of it all. A young zebra-striped designer pup was caught in Choco Chihuahua Castle’s buoyantly dangerous moat! Agonized yelps filled my ears as I darted into action. With a little help from my fellow Pawfect Training Center graduates, we managed to rescue the hapless pup, just as the sun began to light up our little dog paradise.

As the day began, I found myself thinking about the whirlwind of an adventure I’d had. Pawsburg, beyond being my refuge, was a wide playing field of emotions – triumph, suspense, camaraderie. Even my blue dolphin-shaped chew toy, stowed away in my secret hideaway at The Woofy Bakery, couldn’t compare to the thrill of the unpredictable. A life less ordinary was just pawsteps away in the enchanting Pawsburg. As I trotted back home, the first light of dawn kissing my sun-bleached hide, I knew the day had just begun. Pawsburg had many stories to tell and I couldn’t wait to play my part in each one.
