The Christmas Shepherd: A Tail of Joy and Adventure: A Popeye PawWord Story
Hey pal, it’s your main mutt Popeye, aka the Christmas Shepherd, checking in. Just guided Barry the Pug back to his fam on this snow-globe of a night in Pawsburgh. Sniffed out the tale at The Groom Room and led him home – think magi with fur. Mission: jolly and joyous. Now, it’s time for this tail-wagger to chow on some beef bites and snooze with my hedgehog. Bark you later! ๐พ๐โจ – Popeye
There I was, Popeye, the black chessador with the dashing white streak, in the heart of the enchanting Pawsburgh. As the hustle and bustle of Spaniel Springs washed over me, I strutted with a certain nonchalance โ because, after all, when you’re as suave as yours truly, you don’t just walk; you parade. But let’s press paws on the bragging, for it was Christmas Eve and I had business afoot; the most festive kind, if I may add.
Christmas in Pawsburgh is like a tennis ball machine set to ‘endless’. It’s impossible not to bounce off the walls with excitement. Yet, amidst the joy, I had a role of some import, patterned after the noble Christmas Shepherd – guiding the wayward on this most silent and holy of nights.
The flummoxed journeyer of the hour? None other than Barry, a wide-eyed pug from the dim nooks of Terrier Town. Embarked on a quest to reunite with his human before Santa’s sleigh graced the skies, he’d gotten himself as lost as a squirrel at a dog show.
Weaving through the sparkling streets, we visited the boisterous Retriever’s Restaurant where belly rubs were dished out more eagerly than their famed meatloaf, but no sign of his home. Then on we trotted, our four feet tapping a merry beat against the cobbles, caressed by the buttery lights of the Puppy Patisserie. Yet, the scent of his abode eluded us, lost in wafts of beef bites โ my personal drool-worthy favorite โ and the smoky tendrils curling out of Snout Snacks.
Now, I’m no stranger to adventure. My buds, Max and Bella, could attest to that between their wrestles and sniffs. But guiding a lost pup home on Christmas? This was something new under my collar.
“Stick with me, Barry,” I barked over the hum of Canine Couture Clothing, where festive scarves flew off the shelves like frisbees. “I’ve got a nose that can smell a squirrel from seventeen parks away; I’ll get you home.”
As we navigated the winter wonder, lines from my last human-viewed Christmas flick swirled in my head. What was it that that one human said? “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear”? Well, I had a better idea. The best way to spread Christmas cheer is guiding a pug past fear!
Under the frosted moonlight, we approached The Groom Room, its windows fogged from the warmth of freshly pampered pooches inside. I had a lightbulb moment that shone brighter than my polished white streak โ the Groom Room was also the talk of the town, a hive of every bark and sniff that passed through the streets of Pawsburgh.
“Listen here, Barry,” I directed, all business, “we’ll nose out the chatter. If your home is anywhere, the news is here. Never underestimate good old tails wagging tongues.”
And, as if my words were magic, the groomer, a whiskery schnauzer named Klaus, batted his shears and announced, “Little Barry’s human? Why, just left in a flurry by Chestnut Cocker Courtyard!”
With a hero’s resolve, off we dashed, through the nooks and crannies of twinkling Pawsburgh, until at last, we saw the joy of a family and their waiting arms, and a collar that matched Barry’s eager eyes.
There, in the sheltering silence of falling snow, I delivered Barry to his teary humans. I wagged my farewell, my heart as full as my stomach hoped to be back at home with beef bites and my battle-worn hedgehog.
The Christmas Shepherd had guided rightly, and it was, indisputably, the most wonderful bark of the year.
The End.
