Pawsburgh: A Canine Quest for Treasure and Twilight: A Newman PawWord Story
Hey Mom,
Just letting you know that your son, Newman (aka Fatty McFatterson when I’ve snagged an extra treat), has been living it up big style in Pawsburgh. Unraveled a treasure map mystery with Babs and Bruno – found treats and squeaky toys, but kept my sunset spot secret. Life’s a romp, and I’m tail-wagging through every chapter of it!
Stay pawesome,
Newman 🐾
Well now, if you’ll gather ‘round, I’ll spin you a tail as finely twisted as my own. It concerns a magical place, not any bigger than a dog’s imagination and twice as free. It’s Pawsburgh, my dear compatriots, a secret world where our kind can gambol without a leash of human expectation, and where I, Newman—adventurer and philosopher of the canine condition—find myself another escapade, as rich as my favorite chicken dinner.
Now, don’t go romancing no illusions about that electronic play-pretend they call Westworld; you won’t be finding any mechanical cowboys or damsels in distress in Pawsburgh. We deal in real fur-and-bone derring-do, the kind where every sniff, bark, and wag is genuine dog.
Just the other eve, under the moon’s watchful eye, I moseyed over to Setter Shore. There, the water lapped like a hound at a birthday cake, and I felt the tug of adventure in my bones—a rare feeling for a gent who considers a good nap part of the professional repertoire.
I had received an anonymous note, mind you, the handwriting I took to be rushed as if scribbled by a paw not used to holding a pen. It mentioned something about a grand treasure hidden at the very shore where I stood. Like any sensible dog, I hesitated because who knows what lurketh beneath the deceptive calmness of sand and surf. But my curiosity, like that rubber chicken, squawked louder than my caution.
I met there with Babs and Bruno, shrewd companions with noses for news and eyes for intrigue. We decided to tackle this treasure hunt together, for there is strength in a pack, and what’s the joy of finding if there’s no one around to wag at your glory?
Off we set, with not a clue but a note that smelled faintly of Beagle Bagels, no doubt the brand of our mysterious informant.
Our path was to lead us from Setter Shore to the very heart of, you guessed it, Samoyed Square. Now Samoyed Square bustles like a bowl of puppies at dinnertime: wild architecture of all kinds springs up like mushrooms after a spring rain, there’s more shops than you can shake a stick at, and elusive smells that tickle your whiskers come dashing from every alley.
We poked about for sweet minutes or forever – in dog time, you can never be sure – until Babs’s ear perked up as she nosed around near The Woofy Bakery. I saw that twinkle in her eye, the sort that spells trouble and treasure in the same bark.
“Here!” she exclaimed, as we unearthed a box that held such treasures as would make any tail wag: homemade liver treats from Bark-n-Bite Bistro, an assortment of squeaky toys molded into sausages, and a slobber-proof map of Pawsburgh with a hearty X drawn over a location that shone like a pearl. “A mystery within a mystery!” Bruno barked, the sleuth in him alive as a pup at his first park run.
The X marked none other than my heart’s own secret: that place where the sun kisses the horizon. But friends, I didn’t breathe a word to Babs and Bruno. A dog’s got to have his quiet spot, after all, where he can stew in his own thoughts without a care for a rabbit’s prying eye.
So the adventure ended as sudden as it began, with a silent pact among friends over chicken-flavored lattices, and the unspoken agreement that some treasures, much like bath time, are best when avoided. There you have it, friends – a slice of life from Newman, Pawsburgh’s own, where every dog can be a legend in his own time, and every sunset tells a story.
The End.
