Bones and Shadows: A Doberman’s Tale of Pawtective Intrigue: A Gabriel PawWord Story
Hey Mom,
Just wrapped up another “tail” in Pawsburgh—playing detective, keeping tails wagging and trouble at bay. It’s not all fetching sticks and chasing Frisbees, but don’t worry, my fur’s still in perfect shape. I’ll be back on the couch before you even notice I was gone.
Licks & wags,
Gabe 🐾😉
In the shadowy corners of Pawsburgh’s night, where Diamond Doberman Dunes whispered secrets to the silvered moon and Opal Pomeranian Park lay shrouded in a velvety darkness, I trudged through the alleys with a stoic grace only my kind could muster. They called me Gabriel – a Doberman with a coat as black as midnight and rust markings that burned like the smoldering embers of a dying fire.
You see, Pawsburgh wasn’t just fire hydrants and belly rubs; this town had layers, like an overfed lapdog. I was in the thick of it, tail-deep in a collar of trouble, with a thread so tangled, my sharp incisors couldn’t cut through it.
My pawsteps echoed in the melancholic symphony of the night, down towards Bulldog’s BBQ. They say that when life gives you bones, you bury them deep. But buried bones have a haunting way of resurfacing, and tonight was about to flip the doghouse on its head.
Slipping through the back entrance, the aromas of smoked meats and burnt ends cut through the air; Bulldog’s BBQ was the watering hole for all sorts of tail-waggers, from lapdogs to the hounds of hooliganry. And I was here to meet a snout that knew more than it should.
With a low growl, I strolled in. “A glass of your coldest water, keep the ice,” I barked discreetly. In this town, patience wore thinner than a chewed-up leash. Perching on a stool, my eyes cut through the dim lighting like keen-edged knives.
“Gabriel, you’re swimming in foul waters,” a familiar, gravelly voice warned from the darkness. Paige, a Chiweenie with more sass than size, her golden coat glinting like a beacon of pluck, trotted up beside me. For her size, she packed a wallop that could make the fiercest Rottweiler whimper.
“It’s a dirty job, Paige. But someone’s gotta dig up the dirt,” I retorted, my gaze locked on the jackal across the bar. A black-market bone dealer, by the look of him.
Paige’s ears perked up as if straining to catch a frequency meant only for the bravest. “Your mom’s in the dark, Gabriel. She thinks you’re safe, lounging at The Fetching Feline or polishing your sit-stay at The Pawfect Training Center. But if she knew what you’re tangled up in—”
“Let’s just say, I don’t do this for the pig ears, Paige.” I turned to my glass, the water untouched, a metaphor for my own unquenched thirst for truth.
A thump at the back door signaled a new player in the game. The bone dealer slid off his stool, belly low, and sneaked out. My instincts ignited, every strand of fur standing at attention.
Paige glanced at me, a silent understanding flickering in her bright eyes. The chase was on. We weren’t out for a jaunt to Paw Pad Thai, no fortune cookies to crack open here; this was the real deal—a lead so hot it could sear your paw pads.
Through the serpentine streets of Pawsburgh we ran, my heart thumping a drumbeat in my chest. We cornered the cur by the Eskimo Estuary, trapping him between water and fang. I wouldn’t let him slip away—not on my watch. “Start talking, mutt. What’s the deal with the bones?”
Cornered, the dealer yelped his tale, his words tumbling over one another like pups at their first fetch. The truth hit hard enough to knock the wind out of your snout.
Turning away from the estuary’s inky black, Paige rested a paw on my shoulder. “Enough chasing shadows, Gabe. Let’s head home; your mom will be waking up.”
Home. The word sounded like sanctuary. I let out a sigh that seemed to hang in the misty air, the weight of the night lifting off my shoulders. Pawsburgh was safe, for now, and so was the sanctity of our secret lives.
“The rain can’t touch us now, Paige,” I whispered, a hint of a grin creasing my snout. With a nod, we left the estuary behind, our silhouettes stark against the first light of dawn—just two good dogs, finding our way back before Pawsburgh slipped into day and our human world beckoned once more.
The End.
