Clovis PawWord Story
‘Sup Mom, it’s Clovie. Wild day! Ran through Spencerville, outrunning the storm, on a bone rescue mission for Clovis. Was like an action movie! Bone was at the Pup-Peroni, soaked but I got it. Barely avoided Gilbert, fur all damp and muttering dog curses. Home now, bone safe, Clovis wagging again. Note – dogs don’t do heroics in the rain well. #LessonLearned 😅🐾
There I was, running through the charming streets of Spencerville, the hazy images of Red Beagle Beach and Brown Boxer Beach blurring into one as I glanced back, praying I could outrun this monstrosity of a storm. Behind the dire rumbles of the sky I could hear noises of pets across the town calmly finding shelter. They were the smart ones. But my heart was pulsating in my chest, not out of fear of the rain, oh I’ve seen rain before, but for the dread of something much worse.
“Fool,” I mumbled to myself, “all for the love of a white bone.”
Clovis, that brazen bulldog, had left his plush bone at the Pup-Peroni, the most happenin’ joint in Spencerville where all the cool canines dined. Fetching it was a great plot of courage for him, and an even greater folly for me. Clovis had always hated the rain, and I, being his faithful companion, found myself under the damn sky, scurrying like a rat that fell into a vat of tequila.
My mind was seized by the memory of Clovis’s silent plea, his brindle fur standing up with anxiety. The bone, his loyal crony, was away from him. And the damned rain! His spirits were hitting rock bottom with every drop that hit the window. His big bulldog heart laid bare in his eyes. It was a sight as distressing as a whisky bottle turning up empty.
I stepped into Pup-Peroni, soaked and likely looking crazy, but I had his bone. Ah, the Cheerios-flavored steak they served there still lingered in the air. A quick inspection, I discovered Clovis’s precious toy unattended at the corner table.
As the rain started pouring outside, the busy streets grew significantly quieter. Spencerville knew how to respect the rain, offering silence as an ode to the droplets cascading down the sky.
Running back through the comforting streets of Spencerville, past The Wagging Tail Bookstore, nearing our home, I skidded to a halt, eyes locked on the figure before me. There was Gilbert, his mottled fur glowing in the dampness, an image of silent protest to the heavens. Clovis’s comrade! He too hated the water like a cat despised a vacuum.
“Go ahead furball,” I said with a smirk, glancing toward our shared hearth. “Tell them, the crazy one cometh bearing gifts of bone and whatnot.”
Breaking into a sprint, I pictured Clovis’s eager face behind the door, his life returning, his worry fading. Poor fellow just needed his bone – his symbol of comfort, a piece of the puzzle that was his idyllic life in his beloved tranquil Spencerville.
“Nearly there,” I bargained with my lungs, “nearly there.” Anticipation carried me the final yards as I swung open the door, stepping into the warm glow spreading throughout the room. And there he was, all brindle coat and nervous wagging, the heart of our family.
At last, the storm was over, the bone was home, and my beloved Clovis, he was at peace. I could hear Rainy Night Blues serenading from the living room’s gramophone. Spencerville sighed, another storm weathered and another lesson learned, this town never ceased to surprise or educate me.
“Spencerville, you old dog,” I muttered to myself, sinking into the deep armchair, “you’ve got more up your sleeve than any of us realize.”
The End.
