Not the face of a good girl, but rather, Harold’s kind, the ones that trot about the Tan Dalmatian Desert. Far away, in the distant enlightened horizon of Spencerville, there lay the dessert. Each grain of sand, a speck of memory, a cerement of love lost and found.

Leaning against the dusted cacti, I caught Harold’s gaze lingering on the east. He stumbled around in the desert, leaving paw marks that wind couldn’t erase, while his radiant yellow eyes scanned the landscape for familiar faces. Pepper, Penelope he must be missing. Dogs, they are one, connect in ways we could never fathom. A mound not far from him caught his attention. Intrigue or mere curiosity, in Harold’s world, we never know. On digging up the mound, his paw struck against a metallic object. His eyes lit up with pure excitement; food for thought perhaps? Unearthing it revealed, not bones, but a map. No ordinary one, it was a table of delightful eateries, all within Spencerville.

Harold vanquished loneliness with the map leading him to Pup-Peroni. In that restaurant, tails wag in unison, and playful barks echo like melodies. Not Pepper, not Penelope, but he found Smiley, Babe, Pugsley, George, Pooh huddled over Bark Burgers and Pupperoni pizzas. Squinting my eyes, I saw Harold dart towards them, the unexpected reunion catching them off guard, but soon their barks overwhelmed the restaurant, their joy reverberating through Spencerville. My astral form embraced this scene; earthly grief subsided, transmuting the hollow space with joy.

Through the quirks and crannies of Spencerville, Harold’s stately demeanor, the wolf-like aura around him, he garnered both awe and acquaintance. His heart, like East Bulldog Bay, always open, always welcoming.

Even though the journey began with reticence, the town, that peppy paper map, the rendezvous, the unexpected family dinners at Pawsitively Purrfect Pet Store, toys from Fetch! Treats and chews from The Fetching Feline Pet Emporium, became Harold’s interstellar life. Not a life of mere existence, but a destiny drenched in caramel sunsets, reminiscent of day’s end.

Yet, the best part about Harold’s life post-passing was not this new life, the desert, or the reunion. It was the knowledge that beyond Spencerville, beyond the Retriever River, there was a valley that led to a path cloaked in light. That path led to me. Just like that, he became more than a brave dog in a pretty town.

It became a story of Harold, a real tale of how one creature, through love, camaraderie, and a bit of starlit navigation, could conquer the boundless expanse of space and time. Maybe it was Harold’s way of echoing back to me that yes, love transcends all dimensions, even death. And I am here, waiting too, waiting for our candles to burn the same flame once again.
