Well, here we go again.

We pick off life from where we left last night. It was a drab existence indeed, in the basic confines of my dear Lola’s limited knowledge that she was, in fact, a princess in a world known nonchalantly as Pawsburg. Hidden away from peering human eyes, quite the canine paradise, complete with well-maintained parks and…wait for it, doggy restaurants.

Our day’s adventure began, as it always does, with Lola and me sauntering through Golden Gate Gardens. This place is like Disney World for canine folks, filled with acres of bones to ogle at and more fire hydrants than a city block. Lola, with that luminescent white fur of hers and brown patches swaying like rolling sand dunes, was the center of attention, as usual.

The highlight of our promenade was a quick stop at the Pug Palace. This hallowed establishment, dear reader, is the absolute hub of tail wagging, ear scratching, and, of course, scandalous sniffing. Lola, being a friendly sort, decided to make friends with a rather sullen-looking bulldog named Brutus. While he, Brutus, had an uncanny resemblance to a gloomy grumble-bug, Lola, the kind-hearted soul penned on being his friend. Graciously she approaches him, but alas, he paws at her approach, leaving Lola both surprised and a smidge hurt. So much for canine camaraderie.

Keeping up the pace, we wander onto Fetch-N-Bites for lunch. Lola, with an almost aristocratic flick of her tail, leans in as I perused the mouthwatering menu – Doggy Donuts, Kennel Corn, and even diving into dietary horrors, the dreaded Pupcake. But our eyes and noses were set; we were here for one thing and one thing only. Lola’s favorite feature on the menu – the delectable Canine Cheeseburger.

As we dig into our lunch, Lola staring at me wide-eyed from the other side of the table, I get a triumphant idea. An idea that might conquer her aversion of salad or at least trick her into trying it.

“Taste this, Lola,” I say, cherry-topping her cheeseburger with lettuce.

Her look of pure betrayal I shall treasure forever. It was like telling a kid that Santa might be lactose intolerant. It’s not a sight to be forgotten soon.

This should bring to our attention a small tidbit of Lola’s life philosophy. Lettuce for this dog was like jogging for me in a downpour—just not appealing in the least.

We ended our astonishing day at Shepherd Skyline, watching the sun sink in pink and orange blazes, while Lola, the ever-energetic canine, engaged in an impromptu game of tug-war with another dog. Just another day in Pawsburg, the perfect palace of puppy playtime paradise.

As we retire for the day, Lola, content with her cheeseburger and play, cuddles into me, drifting off to dreamland, where she’s a queen in her world of chew toys and no salad. Sleep tight, princess Lola, I thought. Life in Pawsburg was about as easy as a dog fluttering by butterfly wings, but it’s our life, our tale, and boy, do we tell it well.
