For those of you unfamiliar with Pawsburg, it’s a fine and jolly place, hidden from the prying eyes of both masters and mistresses. We dogs sneak off to this gallant town when their backs are turned, or their slumbers deep, for fun and frolic, and for jest and banter.

Boston Terriers, such as I, have an edge in stealth, you see. Wriggling out from my comfortable roost in Ms. Clara’s rose garden, where I usually lounge with Snowdrop and River – them being cats and, thus, beneath me, actually, but nevertheless my companions – I make my way to Pawsburg, abandoning the mailman to his quiet rounds.

Often my mischievous squirrel-duo friends, Fuzzy and Nibbles, accompany me, their eyes as full of mischief as mine. Our encounters with the local cats get quite comical, leaving them figuratively hairless, although mightily indignant.

Now, anyone familiar with the culinary institutions of Pawsburg knows the place to be on a Sunday mornin’ is The Fetching Deli or, for a more refined palate, the famed gourmet delicatessen – Whiskers and Wings. The egg medley there is quite different to the scrambled variety that dear Clara serves up. They are crisper, looser, and luckily, contain no crumbly, displeasing textures.

The memory of the one unfortunate time I was banished to Pet Partners Pet Supplies, after a little disagreement with the former mayor – a brawny Bulldog with an unpleasant odor – still nags me. Accused of felonious theft of the mayor’s favorite fetching stick, I was wrongfully imprisoned within the cluttered confines of the store. I plotted my escape with an elaborated scheme closely resembling ‘Prison Break.’ I realized that the shelter, located adjacent to the store, was not as high-security as its walls boasted.

My protective nature got the better of me, and I rescued a few of my fellow prisoners too, negotiating the labyrinthine interiors of the place. Armed with only a tennis ball, a slab of meat-bone from the Bark Shak, and a stolen pair of sewing scissors from The Tail Wagger’s Tailor, we engineered our daring escape.

Our flight ushered us through the gloomy Westie Woods, and over Lower Silver Siberian Summit. I was glad to duck out of sight when a sudden thunderstorm broke over. We huddled in a cave, with me as their stalwart comfort as Nature roared outside.

After our eventual successful escape back to Pawsburg, the wind of freedom whisked tales of our daring act through town. Suffice to say, when the exhilaration settled down, I found myself a celebrated hero, although the misbegotten stick was never found.

And that’s the dog’s honest truth. Labradoodle Lake still holds the bountiful rest of our adventures, waiting to be dived into. But my friends, those are tales for another day. For now, I leave you to chew over this humble story, with a wine of your own making. Consider it a toast, in honor of our Pawsburg, a grand old secret, fashioned exquisitely by dogs, for dogs.
