Roxy PawWord Story
“Hey Mom! Became Pet Games Champ today! Conquered river fetch, trailblazed Cream Maltese Meadow, outran rivals in muddy race. Tail’s still wagging from victory, realized I’m not just a pet, but a protector, a victor, and a legend of The Pet Games. All in a day’s work! Love, Roxy Foo-Foo!”
Every other Tuesday in the Grand Hall of Golden Gate Gardens, a sign would be posted. “Pet Games this Friday,” it would say. It was a tradition, one that vibrantly pulsated through the very essence of Spencerville.
As per tradition, competitors were chosen from each of the neighborhoods. That week, I, Roxy, was chosen to represent Curly-tail Commons. I wasn’t much of a fighter but I was bestowed with a warrior heart and the spirit of an explorer. My comrades would be Sammy, my brother, representing Border-Border Boulevard, and Trouble, the stout Dalmation from Sneaky-Sneak Street.
Friday dawned, and so did the Pet Games at the Southern Golden Retriever River. The competitive aura flickered with unforgettable vigor. Our first task? Fetch N’ Swim. The owners tossed a stick into the river, and we were to fetch it. Building up my courage with my protective streak, I plunged into the river. Bursting through waves like a torpedo, I snatched the stick before Sammy or Trouble could reach it. My timidity conquered. Victory was mine.
After a lunch of Peanut butter smeared bread and chicken nuggets at Bark and Bites, we found ourselves back in the arena. The next game was an exploration through Cream Maltese Meadow. Armed only with my curiosity and a sense of adventure, I led the squad. A dash through meadows, a dart across fields and a climb up the rocks later, I planted our flag on the mountain top. I had overcome my fear of loneliness, of not having my human beside me. I realised, I was as brave as they come.
The final game was ‘The Great Race’. Exhausted from the day, I chose cheerios over pressure, my Rottweiler/Chow Chow mixed energy over fatigue and set off. My dislike for baths and rain was forgotten as I plodded through the muddy track. I fell behind once, twice, but I pushed myself each time.
And then it happened. A loud bang split the air. I stumbled, an instinctive fear of loud noises pulling me back. I looked around, seeing Sammy’s worried eyes, Trouble pacing back and forth.
“Roxy,” Sammy barked, “remember, we are Rottweiler and Chow Chow bred tough.”
With a newfound determination, I pulled together all my affability, remnant energy, and my love of the game, and made a final grit-fuelled dash. Before I knew it, the finishing line was under my paws. I panted heavily, yet my tail wagged enthusiastically. I had won, I realised, not just the game, but over my fears too.
The pride on Sammy’s face, the cheers echoing across Spencerville and the satisfaction in my heart was a heady mix.
In the evening, at the after party at Kibble Cuisine, wearing a beautiful gown from The Tail Wagger’s Tailor, I knew this was my moment. I was not just Roxy, the Golden red Rottweiler/Chow Chow mix anymore. I was Roxy, the Pet Games Champion. I realised, as I smiled for the camera at Best in Show Photography, I wasn’t just Roxy, the pet anymore. I was Roxy, the protector, the victor and most importantly, the overcomer.
And so, in Spencerville, I became the embodiment of a legend in the making, Roxy of The Pet Games.
The End.
