In the early hours of Saturday, just like any other, I found myself at Maltese Meadows – the doggy haven of Pawsburg, a ball in hand with Beau at my side, his tail wagging enthusiastically. A day of peace, tranquility, and a voyage into the expanse of canine soccer. Well, as tranquil as you could expect with Beau.

We arrived at our regular spot on the Meadow, right next to The Tail Wagger’s Tailor. The sight of Beau charging into the open space was a spectacle that brought joy to the heart – a larger-than-life Shollie bracing the wind with his spiked fringe flowing like a knight’s banner. Beau’s eyes locked onto the field as he sniffed the air, his playground… no, his kingdom.

It was a regular day indeed, with the normal gathering of the local pack; Max the bulldog flexing his gruff demeanour, Belle the golden retriever demonstrating her air of warmth, and Pippin the beagle, bursting with life. But today was slightly different, today marked the annual Pawsburg Soccer Cup, and Beau, as you’d guessed it, was the self-designated striker.

“Ah, the football virtuoso has arrived,” barked Max, a statement consisting of slight sass and obvious respect. Beau’s ears perked up and he pranced towards the makeshift pitch.

Now, the matches in Beau’s eyes were all or nothing. Seeing him on the field was like watching one of those professional athletes, but instead of a jersey, he wore his black and white speckled fur, and instead of a tactical plan, he had Max and Pippin backing him up. The rubber dinosaur toy he insisted on using as a ball lent an air of eccentricity to the whole gameplay. The match was as unconventional as it could get.

At the halftime bark, the score stood at 2-1, with Beau’s team trailing by a goal. Beau sat, panting and determined, looking no less victorious than a gladiator in the arena.

“Good boy! You’ve got this,” I encouraged, throwing him a piece of grilled chicken from Bark and Bites. His favorite. That brought a glint in his eyes, and it felt like Beau could take over the world if he wanted. I could almost imagine him saying, ‘Hold my cucumber!’

The second half was a whirlwind. Amid dodging, tail shaking, and distant cheers, Beau launched at the dinosaur toy, giving it a decisive kick. Pure genius. Within moments, he led his team to an even score, chasing it with a final goal that put them ahead. The crowd of canines erupted in bark-cheers, tails wagging everywhere as Beau took his victory lap around the field.

Later that day, Beau lay exhausted, yet pleased, stretching out at Beagle Beach, his wet nose nuzzled against the sand-coated dinosaur. And as the sun painted the sky with hues of orange and purple, Beau looked at me, still panting from the day’s adventure, seemingly ready for another day at his kingdom.

Sports in Pawsburg was never about winning or losing. It was about camaraderie, the thrill of the chase, and the sheer fun of being out and about. But for Beau, every moment was a win; every throw of the toy dinosaur, every piece of grilled chicken, every raucous bark from his friends. Life, it seemed, was his soccer field. In the company of his friends, under the endless sky, Beau was truly the king of Pawsburg.
