Roberto Gordon Gau – we called him Gordon PawWord Story
“Hello fam, Gordon here, your hometown detective, food critic, and sunbathing aficionado. I’ve spent the day sniffing out the culinary mysteries of Spencerville, while avoiding aquatic nightmares and perfecting the art of social distancing from fellow canines. Also rescued Hedgey from the wilderness. Signing off, your eternally lovable Chicken Nugget.”
Well, there I was meandering down the cobbled streets of Spencerville—the paradise where all pets live, play, and waft their tails. Gordon was with me, that beauteous beagle, all 28 pounds of him. Those doleful brown eyes—enchanting to a fault, framed by velvety, droopier ears. “Oh, the stubbornness,” I mused, staring at his graying face.
We had traipsed past East Pug Palace and Eastern White Westie Woods, and were trotting towards South Siberian Summit when the whiff of something delicious filled the air. Gordon’s nose shot up, trembling with anticipation. A mystery to solve perhaps? Or maybe Fishy Bites was serving up some clam chowder. Judging by Gordon’s taste for the non-aquatic – chicken, bananas, liver, we thought it could be Kibble Cuisine’s Turkey Twists. Although, strawberries were out of the question, the only fruit that failed to woo this furball.
Besides sniffing out delicacies scattered around, Gordon had another passion—snuggling into a perfect patch of sunshine in the backyard. He could laze away in the sun as if the world slowed its spin for him. The likes of beaches or dog parks, or god forbid, the doggy pool, these were his mortal enemies. Perhaps the horror of swimming brought this dislike. I remember once bath time had led to us spending an afternoon sprucing up the bathroom—much too dramatic.
As we rounded the corner, we spotted a splash of pink. Our gaze fell onto Gordon’s favorite companion, his cherished hedgehog. Funny enough, he looked up at me as if to scold – “Who do you think left it here?” I couldn’t contain my chuckle as he picked it up gingerly in his mouth and continued his stroll.
His confidantes, Cede and Lexi, both Basset hounds, were spotted sunning themselves in front of The Fetching Feline Pet Emporium, which seemed to be Gordon’s cue to speed past. Abby, Emma, and Quincy, fellow beagles, yapped in recognition, but Gordon? He kept his head high, staunchly living his lone-wolf existence. It was a sight to behold.
As the day rolled to an end, the glint in Gordon’s eye said it all. The mystery of the whiff remained. The thought tasted sweeter than the conclusion, a tale worth telling in splendid Spencerville, the haven where pets were kings and queens, waiting for their beloved human to join them someday.
The End.
