It’s your Jaz Bug reporting from Spencerville. Just finished my morning patrol across Husky Hill. Life’s quite the adventure here, you know. I made friends with Jax over a riveting squirrel chase, discovered a new star-shaped leaf for my collection and outsmarted that pill hidden in my dinner. Still unfriending Cats, vacuums, rain, and the vet. Missing our car rides to Pawsitively Purrfect! Oh, and spaghetti remains my guilty pleasure. So, life’s good, simple, and wagging away. Just the way I love it!

Think Spencerville, the sweet small town big city, where only the truly deserving are allowed to tread their paws upon. Rolling hills, Shih Tzu Stadium, Collie Canyon, Husky Hill – pure canine geography! And there’s Jazzy, adding a dash of Aussie Shepherd-Norwegian Elkhound exoticism to this tail-wagging utopia. Far from being an everyday dog!

She has her own way, you know? Comfortably defiant, blissfully stubborn – charmingly Elkhound, in other words. Yet, she doesn’t allow that stubborn streak to tarnish her heart of gold, her effervescent affection. She’s friendly to all, favors only Jax though. Jax, the wiry little rule-bender, the terrier revolutionary. Squirrel-chasing anarchists in a past life, I’ll wager.

Jazzy, this is to say; she is not one for the glitz and the fast life. No sirree! No overcrowded dog parks for her, no lengthy adoption events or boisterous parades. She yearns for the much relished solitude. Quiet walks in the park, the concealed nooks between the dense forest and her backyard are realms of ecstasy for her, a veritable paradise away from chaos. But make no mistake, my friend, she’s not averse to a century-old car ride, down to the Pawsitively Purrfect Pet Store or the Woofy Bakery.

Speaking of Woofy Bakery reminds me of her taste buds – as nuanced as they come! Devours chicken and rice, and her favourite – kibble swimming in rich, wholesome broth. And between you and me, she’d gladly demolish any spare spaghetti or cheeseburger that I might have. Spaghetti may come as a shocker, but there it is. Quirky, huh? But dare you fool her with a pill hidden in her food and you’d see a different Jazzy, a less than pleased Jazzy. She can spot a pill miles away. Time and again, I’ve learned that lesson the hard way.

Have you seen her toy chest? Would make an intriguing exhibit at the Smithsonian! A treasure trove of leaves, twigs and all of nature’s knick-knacks – squirrel tails, moss-laden branches, dried butterfly wings. Oh, the stories they hold! A saga of sly squirrels and their audacious deeds, of forest winds whispering riddles in her ears.

Ah, the dreaded vacuum cleaner! The nemesis of our celebrated Elkhound. Its purring, a monstrous growl in her ears. You should see her show her disdain; she is really more like a cat in dog form. Speaking of, she doesn’t quite favour them, the cats. Personal bias perhaps, owing to a convoluted history only dogs can understand. And rain and vets, her personal supervillains.

Yet, despite her oddities and eccentricities, there’s something about Jazzy. Something that draws you – pulls you in, just like that. That vibrant silvery mane, those kind hearted, honest eyes. Laughs and sighs, merry chases, puppy eyes – she might not save the world, but she’s saved mine, a hundred times over. And really, I wouldn’t want it any other way. That, is the power of our superpower-less dog, Jazzy. Always there to protect – her family, her home, her Spencerville. After all, every place needs its avengers. Here, they just happen to have four legs and a tail.
