The night had us dodging the dreaded Mail-Bringer and chasing down thieves. All in a night’s work for us in the Pet-Nine-Nine! Now time for some victory carrots. Stay pawsome! – IG

Barely had the last sliver of the sun disappeared below the horizon when Pawsburg sprung to life. As the human world settled down for the night, our little suburb did quite the opposite. Of all its vibrant residents, let me introduce you to one your heart would remember – Pepper, the plucky cockapoo whose spirit personified the tale.

One night in Pawsburg, as the moon danced in the night sky and the Canine Café buzzed with conversations and clinking dog bowls, I looked up from my kibble to see Pepper, my partner, walk through the gleaming door.

Her caramel and chocolate coat pooled around her feet as she stopped for a moment, letting the room take in the grandeur that she was. She tottered over, hazel eyes glinting with intelligence, and spat out a squeaky-toy hedgehog in a worn-out trenchcoat.

“Look alive, rookie,” she said, tossing her snout towards her companion. “It’s Mr. Needles, on the case.”

Together, Pepper and Mr. Needles, her tenacious sidekick often used as a chew toy, had ousted more pet criminals than any other in Pawsburg’s Pet-Nine-Nine. From catching Fuzzy the sly dachshund red-handed with a ball not his at Golden Gate Gardens to putting a stop to the notorious midnight food bandits at the buzzing Ruff-n-Ready eatery, the duo had tales aplenty.

Over a hearty feast of raw carrot sticks and assorted doggie delights from The Fetching Deli, we got a call. A high-strung heist at Pawsitively Purrfect Pet Store with the looming threat of a massive toy theft – and another adventure was up on the block.

Pepper shot me a “Ready, rookie?” over her shoulder as she dashed out of the door, her perfectly french-fried potato tail bobbing with anticipation, and I chased after her, my canine instincts pumping with adrenaline.

Pepper was always quick, always sure. But, as we neared the crime scene, the dreaded monster of metal roared down the asphalt – the mail van. Despite her valiant endeavors, the sight gave Pepper significant pause.

With its growling engine echoing her worst nightmares, Pepper stood firm. With a quick bark of encouragement to the frozen Mr. Needles, she channeled her fear into determination, charging headlong into the golden glow of Husky Hill. She left the pesky menace known to Pawsburg simply as the “Mail-Bringer” behind.

We tackled down the crime scene, purrfectly. Crackling with energy, matching wits with the toy thieves, her rebellious spirit left our foes foxed while making sure even in the face of mischief, Pawsburg could lay its trust unflinchingly on our Pet-Nine-Nine.

Pepper may be Pawsburg’s fierce guardian, but more so, she’s one hell of a friend. And as the sun began to peek over Pawsburg, awakening the human world, Pepper took one last bite of her victory carrots, tossed Mr. Needles onto her back, and dashed towards her welcoming suburban home. I supposed she fancied in the quiet satisfaction of another story penned, another mystery tamed.
