I’m Severide. It’s not my real name but it’s the one Mrs. Bloomfield gave me in a flurry of old lady sentimentality and a closet addiction to Dynasty. Yes, it’s a dog-eat-dog world in Pawsburg, and who better to navigate it than the cutest, sassiest little Frenchie-Pom with an insatiable appetite for spinach pizza.

Anyway, my day started like any other, a peaceful snooze on the cushioned seat of my favorite rocking chai—WHAM! “Code Yellow Sunflower!” Max hissed. Duke and Noodles, took off towards Fawn Cream Maltese Meadow. One glance at Max’s panic-stricken eyes and I understood it was politics as pawsual today in Pawsburg.

With a sense of dread creeping over my heart, and knowing pizza isn’t a stand-alone meal, I followed my comrades. We made a pit stop at Waggle n’ Wok. Duke was always one to set aside politics when he smelled the crispy ‘Duck a la Carte,’ and Noodles? Well, Noodles is just…Noodles.

Now, I always felt our town was like a Cirque du Soleil show. Sidesplittingly hilarious, yet so real. Until the Terrieratzi started – a ruthless gang running the Paws-A-Latte stand by day, and by night, orchestrating shameless plots to overthrow the democratically elected Mayor John-John; a surprisingly dignified pug who ruled us from the palatial Pug Palace.

The Terrieratzi’s new plot was terrifying. They were planning to overthrow Mayor John-John with a massive sunflower heist from our sacred field. Training crows to snatch them up, they’d devise a sunflower shortage which John-john couldn’t control! They’d then swoop in offering a solution, showing they were more reliable leaders. A classic power play.

We hurried through the hush of Westie Woods to immediately warn John-John. Max, with his cat reflexes, scaled Pug Palace’s walls, snuck inside and informed him of the impending peril.

Meanwhile, in true spirit of Hollywood-heist-film-but-make-it-Pawsburg, we devised our block-the-crows operation. I rallied troops from Fetch! Toys and Treats while Duke and Noodles handled reconnaissance. Soon enough, we had an army of toy helicopters ready to act as aerial distraction.

The devious operation was defeated as the dawn turned from cerise to azure. The Terrieratzi got caught red pawed, their plot busted. Mayor John-John was safe, and the town’s democratic framework saved. And of course, I discovered that Pawsitively Purrfect Pet Store could penn. Who knew?

Needless to say, politics is just an another walk in the dog park at Pawsburg. Even when the world seems steeped in chaos and doughnut holes, a little faith, lots of laughter, and a dash of good old-fashioned friendship can set things right. Also, spinach pizza.

Sure, being a political operative may seem tough. And Mayor John-John may need to up his snack game a little. But, hey, as Mrs. Bloomfield never fails to tell me… “Severide, you’re one courageous pup chained to a wild ride of life!”
